The length of trace material, now there is another whole Argument/Debate in its own right.

 

everything is arguable about ,if your float fishing in the margins then i guess i would rather have a bolting bait fish dash in 12" than 24" or float fishing above weed thats a foot below the surface etc

 

terrible as well when you get a long wire catching a rear fin as well if a fish does a bit of rolling but thats my opinion and i think if a pike got into a snag where you had to break theres a chance a shorter wire could be shaken loose by the pike easier than one twice the lenght if the break was at the wire to mono swivel area

 

the wire is to stop the teeth cutting the line how many pike have 2ft long mouths? if by bad luck they swallowed the hooks ,i would love to catch one where the full 24" (or perhaps even 18") was needed ,my PB 29lb certainly didnt have a head that big

I confess, I don't know pike. With carp the enzymes dissolve a ferrous hook in 4 - 7 days. I can only assume it is similar with pike. If the "event" you suggest take place the trace loose on both ends should benefit the likelyhood the fish will survive.

 

OTOH they are only fish.

over here our pike dont grow on trees as it were especially in the south and are very expensive beasts so in most respects are not just fish

luckily more and more clubs are starting to realise this and more rules are coming in to protect them (and their money) so theres more respect for what not long ago was just a fish.

 

farnham is certainly getting better and hopefully get even better ,we actually cannot fish for pike without visiting a handling course and your not getting away without having the right equiptment on the evening of the teach in either ,nones perfect but it can improve and now as i mentioned even the blooming catfish (not exactly slow growing sparse breeders) are having rules for their benefit but so far carp anglers are getting it easy apart from landing net sizes and unhooking mats (or fish beds as a polish angler scratched his head thought on being reminded they were mandatory for all anglers )

probably mandatory unhooking mats have been (in a bailiffs eyes) the hardest part to impinge on the angler and the "i'v fished for 40 years etc" heard more times than i would prefer but now 99.000% of them have them and probably a fair few have never been unrolled but rules is rules ,if i follow them then they sure will

You would be chased out of town with 10" over here. UK ladies expect more then that

i only state what i see theres little to lose in an hour chatting with anglers and at least handling a pike (as well as simulated unhooking through both mouth and gills ) than catching your first one and ****ing it all up and quietly (while looking both ways) releasing a dying pike back into the water.

once you have the red stamp in your book thats it ,its not really that bad unless you get a tooth in your finger

its an hour of chatting at least and meeting new members if you get involved!. as you are asked to bring your pike gear as well it shows (at least on the night) you will have appropriate unhooking gear and something more than a pan net to land a pike in if your fortunate enough to catch one.

 

what happens beyond that is up to the angler theres bad anglers just as there's bad drivers with driving licences but the club does its best

 

the teachin is for those that want to target pike not a general teachin for every angler but IMHO it wouldn't be a bad idea you can catch pike accidentally
