Herons

My mate (chainsaw) is having problems with a Heron and has lost a couple of fish to it. He is thinking of an electric fence as he does not like nets.

 

Any other ideas would be welcome.

Sorry to be a bit negative, but I don't think you can do much to deter Herons in the actual approach to the pond. I've tried the usual tactics, fishing line, plastic Herons etc & the only way that seems to have beaten them is changing the pond dramatically.

 

What I did was dig out the pond so that it had vertical sides of min 3foot this mean't it could not step into the pond. Also my plants were set on stools that have space underneath them where the fish can go if they feel threatened.

 

I planted quite heavily around the pond so that the Heron only had a couple of small access points.

 

With making life harder for the Heron to catch the fish, It made him wait around a lot longer to do any damage, & to be truthful with them being a naturally cautious bird I don't think they're keen to make the extra effort.

 

The consequence was he looked for easier targets & fingers crossed, I haven't lost a fish since I did this.

we tried the electric fence it failed but did give the resident dogs an adverse feeling to swimming in the pond

as i said before somewhere the only thing that worked was a large black plastic cat with enormous eyes this was moved every night , but nothing is 100%

You can buy (or make your own) fish hiding place like the one below. This should help & give the fish some refuge in winter.

I kept a loaded Smith and Wesson .38 blank firer by the kitchen window, and if he was stupid enough to stay after I fired off a couple of rounds I set the dog on him!
