Hooks for roach fishing

What do people use? For fishing for roach with flake I'd have thought you would want size 12 to maybe 2.5lbs B/S, but all the size 12s I can find are at least 5lbs B/S. Maybe I need to tie my own, but even then I haven't been able to find fine wire spade end hooks in size 12. Any suggesgtions welcome.

I use drennan hook to nylon. Size 18 hook to 1.5lb line. I works well, I just cover the entire hook in the flake, so far Ive not had any problems. I prefer 20 on 1lb with an 8mm bread punch, but each to their own.

I use all of the following:

Image Maggot hook size 14, Mustad 39082 size 12 (truly ancient as out of production for 30 years!), Kamasan B511 14-10, Kamasan Whisker 14-10. All of these are fine wire and tried and tested for big roach. I tie my own hooks.

I use *Drennan Specimen Crystal* eyed hooks for most of my bread flake fishing.

Ditto. Also like Kamasan B983 wide gape specialist - strong and reasonably fine in the wire.

I've had no problem's using animals. They are a larger hook than some others in the same sizes and a bit heavier but you can use a smaller size. A size 14's is ok for bread flake if your not using large peices. I always use barbed spade ends and tye my owm to silstar matchman or prestons...

If you look at the diamaters you can go quite low diameter and still have a decent strength line. Imo there's no need for fine wire especially if using flake as it masks the hook anyhow. Also the old idea of the weight affecting the bait presentation is again imo nonsense.

Tigger, you are a man after my own heart:thumbs:. I use spade end "Animals" all the time coupled with Reflo hooklinks and have no problem finding plenty of good Roach on bread!

Have you looked at the Mustad Long Point range, fine wire available in the smaller sizes and the longer shank gives you enough room to pinch a largish piece of flake on without masking the hook

I use the longpoint wide gape pattern - also use the canal seed for tiny bread baits winter stillwater fishing.

I have always found you can never get pre tied hooks in the size to line diameter(breaking strain) then you need (especialy in lower sizes) - I suppose there are two many permutations and the manufactuers tie on what they feel is best.
