I'm not a supporter of the death penalty, but if you enter a country that has the death penalty and then commit a crime that attracts it, you can't really complain.

Personally, I'm not in favour of the death penalty and even though I concede that some people deserve it, dealers of cannabis are not amongst them in my opinion. I'm also of the opinion that people own their own bodies and what they do to them is no business of the state's.

 

For all that, I have to agree with Elton, if he's executed he will be paying the price of stupidity. What an idiotic thing to do.

 

Assuming, of course, that he is guilty and gets a fair trial. The UAE is not somewhere I'd like to be a foreigner accused of a crime.

Probably not the safest of places to sell cannabis after Keith Brown was given four years in jail for the henious crime of possessing 0.003g of cannabis contained in a discarded joint stuck between the tread on the sole of his shoe.

I feel desperately sorry for his family.

 

It is true to say that when you go to another country, you have to accept their laws as as condition of entering....No argument.

 

BUT........i note he is only 21 years old...I have met other young men of around this age who have got themselves in trouble here, just because they assume that everywhere has the same "rules" as the UK.

 

A lack of education, and certainly intelligence in the ones i have met, im wondering if that is the same in this case now.

Young men do stupid things all over the world.

Does he deserve to die for it? of course not.

The UAE is probably the most enlightened and westernised of the Arab states.I lived and worked in Dubai back in the 80s and spent a couple of nights in prison there (I have been in many worse hotels)

Still way out of your comfort zone though. I can't imagine what he and his family are feeling but I think it unlikely that they will execute him.

I was going to ask that; do they execute many people out there, especially foreign nationals?
