Not only is this a good way to cut yourself, but you are unlikely to get a good edge if the stone is not kept immobile.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

That's a diamond sharpening stone/block/whatever. That's only priced at £8?? It's either amazingly cheap or extremely poor quality.

na, i get me planer blades from wicks, Reverse them once, then throw away when no more wood chippings spew out of the machine, simples.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

I've got a few of the oilstones like that in the pic kirisute posted; coarse on one side, smoother on the other. After using a chisel or plane, always finish off by sharpening them, and put the stone on a flat surface unlike the dingbat in the pic :rolleyes:

 

Andrew, I've got one similar to the one you posted too, about £5 from Aldi. Doesn't do a bad job but I prefer the oilstone.

Hasany one seen that flat type sharpener that joiners use to sharpen plane blades?

That's just a pc I found on the net quickly...but your right...accident waiting to happen.

My oil stone is in a wooden box with removable lid. All my knives ( and some of my swords) get a run across it regularly to ensure a good edge.
