Winter Night Fishing?

None of my club waters or half decent day ticket waters allow night fishing. I do stay up to dark in late summer and early autumn for perching which I enjoy, but even if I could night fish I wouldn't at this time of the year, it's too bloody cold! This time of the year I tend to only fish for about 5 hours maximum unless piking.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

John we have moved to Eastbourne and I think I will leave night fishing until I know of a safe place to do it or I gain a fishing mate Ted

where have you moved too?.

 

I think the fear of crime is often greater than the threat but it pays to be carefull and depends where you are.

 

The wild fens are as dangerous as some inner city area's at present and no one will hear cries for help.

 

However I have not felt too intimidated so far and mostly fish alone. I do however sleep a lot better when accompanied.

 

Fishing clublakes with others around is generally pretty safe.

I would have thought a few more would do some over nighters. I know John goes out in all weathers but thought there might be a few others, Good to see you posting John.

 

I can't really make up my mind whether it is worth the effort in general to night fish in winter but as it is mild at the moment I will do a night tomorrow before it turns cold again. I doubt it will become a regular thing for me but the chance of a big Zander is a good temptation to get out there.

Couldn't go yesterday. Running my own business is challenging at present with the economic climate. I am basically having to work longer and longer to earn less money and that tires you out.( espescially when your old :o )

 

However I am refreshed this morning and am off to my pack my old disco and then to the fens for a night session.

 

It was 6.3c here this morning at 6am. Thats warmer than a lot of april/may nights. That often happens in winter with a mild airstream so its not all ice and snow.

 

I will zander fish tonight and then daytime tomorrow for roach and perch.

 

Good luck Dales may we both be blessed with some z's and I don't mean a long sleep. :D

That is a good point John, I used to do nights for zander in the fens in winter, but in relatively mild weather (more chance of fish), but I've done loads of nights in spring for tench and bream that have been way colder!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I've done a couple over the years, but much prefer my own bed after fishing a few hours into the dark, I probably fish longer after sunset in winter than I do in summer, but I don't do all night.

Good luck John, lets hope the Zeds are hungry tonight. Currently Pike fishing but will go smaller bait and tackle wise in a few hours. I also bought a light spinning outfit and will have an hour or so on the Ouse tommorow see if I can pick up a Perch or Chub.

 

Cracking day to be out, all the best for any one fishing this weekend. It certainly feels more like a spring day then winter.

I have been invited to do a couple of nights next weekend. Quarry will be large carp and there are sturgeon in the lake up to 85lb so one of those would be fun.

Don't have a problem with the weather, it was much colder in Scotland (in the summer :P )

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

Which species do most people night fish for? Is there any species where night fishing is any better than day fishing? That sounds sarcastic as I type it but it's not meant to be, but with no night fishing experience I wouldn't know. I read magazines where people night fish for carp, eels and catfish but is the fishing any better than in the day, I don't know.

 

The only species that would temp me to night fish would be perch, but I read somewhere, possibly one of steve Burks articles where he mentions that after about an hour into darkness it's not very succesful.
