All the above inventions are very good.

 

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the steam engine yet. Wasn't this the workhorse of the industrial revolution, driving the mills, the factories, the trains, the barges, and the farm machinery??

 

The Silicon Chip? The workhorse of the digital revolution. Computers, calculators, miniturisation of the old solid state devices that made radios the size of credit cards replace the old wooden box full of valves and variable capacitors made from large metal vanes. Computers the size of whole rooms shrunk to the size of a book.

 

So, what is going to be the next big revolution?

 

Nanotechnology?

 

Little artificially intellegent machines swimming around in your blood running constant repairs? Humans live longer...more overcrowding on the planet...colonisation of the moon? Computers more powerful that the latest desktop PC these days will all fit on a pinhead?

 

GM technology?

 

Genetically modified crops. Bigger food mountains for the rich countries to sell/trade to the poor countries...They have just mothballed GM rapeseed planting in E.Yorks because the GM Seed had been modified with the wrong genes!!!

 

Are we getting too far ahead of ourselves for the sake of progress?

 

We may have advanced technologically, but can anyone say we have advance as a race of people?

 

So many questions and so few answers.....only time will tell.

A toss up I'd say, between fire and beer. The controlled use of fire and fermintation, spawned cooking, heating, metalergy, long term storage of food, chemistry, medicine and easy women.

 

Good enough by anyone's standards.
