Hiya,

Am I the only one that's sick of hearing about Will and his hype??

They were going on about how he had smashed the record for the fastest selling single and the only Elton's candle in the wind sold more. if thats true how can he have smashed the record?

oh and having just watched him, gareth and Rick on the Box.. the fat bloke wins hands down.. what a voice.

Why is it that females buy cd's and play the same song over and over and over and over. I've had to put up with the neighbours hifi blasting out Will's Evergreen all weekend.

Even the wife has this same habbit (but with other songs)

Is this normal behavour or should I seek medical help?

The record is actually for the fastest selling debut single.

I still think its crap & all the hype! well they did say when it first started it wasn't going to be another "hear say" & they were right ...its worse.

His record company have stopped him from playing on top of the pops because the producers won't let him sing both songs off his debut single (they reckon it would take up a quarter of the show).

Sick of will?? damn right i am & we never even watched the program.

Why can't these "top" music companys get out there & find the music talent the old fashioned way ??

Look at anglersnet we've got Gray "punky piker" catchpole & his band so if Elton can find a popstar i'm sure the companys can :D

People get what they deserve...

If people didn't watch programmes like soap idols and pop whatevers, search for a planet etc. TV companies wouldn't make them!

As for the music... i get the impression the 'music' was manufactured by the music industry and just about anybody could have been chosen and would probably still had the biggest, fastest shiniest, wobbliest, no1 hit whatever...

Commercialism gone mad... and people who make it pay... the people who buy the rubbish... the've gone mad as well!

I think it's great - and being 8000km away and never likely to hear the record, I would say that would'nt I.

The popstars and popidols programs have lifted the lid on manufactured bands and made it ovious just how little talent these folks have.

Even my 12 year old sister now realises that the whole Heresay thing was manufactured.

There is now every possibility that we're about to see another explosion of real bands playing real music as even the kids turn their backs on Mr Waterman and $hit factory.

Hmmm - I'm not really sure what's upsetting people. The pop music industry is just the same as it's always been - extremely shallow. They blow with the wind, make short-sighted decisions and milk any vague success to the n'th degree. The main difference these days is that music industry is much better at marketing and the news media are so obsessed by the cult of celebrity that they'll jump into bed with them at the slightest opportunity. You also have a public who are also obsessed by fame - everybody wants their 15 minutes and they don't care what they have to do to get it. One of the things that struck me about the Pop Idol auditions was that many of the 'singers' must have realised that they were terrible but were prepared to put up with the humiliation precisely because they got their TV spot and thus 'fame'.

Go through the history of pop. At every stage you'll find manufactured bands put together by producers and marketing men for the sole purpose of making money. Taste and talent didn't enter into it - if the kids bought it then it was good and it was ruthlessly copied by 20 other labels. The main difference these days is that the turnover seems much faster and the improved marketing makes it mor obvious.

What Pop Stars & Pop Idol has done is merely highlight the way it works. At least doing it this way the people that get through have some talent instead of being picked on image alone (Sid Vicious anybody?). Pop Idol especially turned up kids who had talent. Any of the last 10 could make it in the music industry, not necessarily as pop stars, but in musicals, cabaret etc etc. And the show gave them a chance that otherwise they probably wouldn't have got. All they had to do was turn up at a audition whereas to do it the normal way requires demo tapes etc which requires knowledge and money to do right.

So don't blame Gareth & Will & the rest of them for them being 'manufactured' pop stars because that's what it was all about. What I'm looking forward to is seeing how they develop once they've gone beyond the initial hype and start to actually get some control of their own careers, in much the same way that Robbie Williams & George Michael (and perhaps even Kylie) went down exactly the same path.

At the end of the day nobody goes the course in the music industry if they haven't got talent. Sooner or later they get 'found out' by the record-buying public and disappear. I actually think that by finding their pop stars in this way they're shortening their odds of finding talented people who could potentially go the course.

There is of course 1 other huge point that's been overlooked - if you're over 30 then the record industry don't give a toss about you anyway. They're quite content to keep churning out safe U2, Elton John & Maria Carey albums for us but their real target is aged 10 to 16 and mostly female, and in the target audiences own words "you don't understand it!"

opinions, living or dead, are entirely coincidental.

Why do I feel alone in not knowing who Will is?

Apart from hearing a snatch of his record and a small report on radio 5 about his massive record sales, I don`t know what all the fuss is about?

Maybe I lead a sheltered life? I don`t listen to `pop` music stations, I never watch any mass audience telly programmes (who cares who wins `Pop Idols, Big brother, Survivours etc). I read the telly listings to avoid all that dross.

When I asked people at work about this Will rage? They had the same reaction as me. Will who?

So he`s sold a million records in one week. The Beatles had over a million copies of their next single ordered before it was ever recorded.

Was it Peter Sarstead? ( The guy from Corrie`) Had the biggest debut single ever. `Where do you go to my lovely` in the late 60`s.

Manufactured bands or arists? They`ve been with us forever. From Phil Spectre and the `Ronnettes`, Malcom McLaren and the `Sex Pistols up to the present day?

Now that we`re (a tad) older, we decry what the youngsters are buying. Find it manufactured and not `real` music.

`Pop music` has always been produced to entertain the youngsters? Sorry folks!! Why don`t we just admit we`re getting old? Let the sales of `Grecian 2000` slump and get on with our lives?

I`ve got tomorrow off. I`m going to have a few tinnies too many tonight, have a `sweat the hairs off a turtle` curry and come home to listen to some 70`s crap that will make me feel younger `till I wake up with the obligatory hang-over`?

Time moves on, whether you like it or not!!

PS. That little daughter besides you? Is the sexual fantasy of one of your neighbours lads?

Grow up.

We don`t use J`s anymore!!
