Digital Cameras

I have been thinking for a while that a digital camera would be a worthwhile acquisition, but my head is now reeling from looking at various specifications etc.

The question is just how badly do I need a zoom (either digital or optical) bearing in mind that my current fishing camera is a 35mm compact without zoom and I can't say I've ever needed it for fishing photos.

Any recommendations @under£250. Must have self timer.

I won't recommend a camera but for prices have a look at www.pricerunner.co.uk or was it .com

Thanks so far guys, but can you check that number?

I can't find a 1300, nearest to that is a 1400.

The technology is still advancing quickly so they seem to change model number every 6 months or so!

Personally, unless you're intending on using it purely for trophy fish shots, I'd recommend a camera with an optical zoom. It's amazing how often you use it once you have the option and these days it almost more difficult to buy one without.

Digital zoom is in my opinion less usefull as it requires more fiddling about to use. I've used mine once in 3 years against using the optical zoom almost every time I use the camera.

Definitely get one with a zoom, preferably about 3x. You will use it all the time to "frame" your pics. And you will not have to enlarge them so much for printing and so get better prints.

Zoom - absolutely.

It will wind up being among the features you are most fond of. Right up there with flash and the ability to remote shoot.

Best under £200 is the Olympus c220, www.jungle.com has them for £199. Difficult to find in stock on the high street as they are so well regarded. A brand new model, it has high enough resolution to print just like conventional film, and has 3x optical (i.e. "real") zoom as well as digital zoom (which is a con - don't bother with it)

Loads of useful features, easy to use and very small, easily slips in the pocket. I bought one for my wife and she is delighetd, it is better than the Kodak I bought for myself 2 years ago at twice the price! Have a look at Jungle, it has reviews from customers that may help.

And I've been using an earlier Olympus not unlike the C220 for 3 years or so now - excellent piece of kit and has never let me down!
