I wonder if they've trade marked everything ending in Z - I'm trying out some new groundbait from Hinders called "snailz". God knows what is in it, but it doesn't smell very nice!

 

Adding a Z to the end of your products does seem to be popular with tackle companies. I have used Hinders Nutz before.

It only works if you team it up with their ”Slugz” hook bait !

What do you use the sultanas for, Carp?

Some years back, before you posted on this forum, Newt did a piece on fermented sultanas.

 

I tried them on a water that produces mixed bags of roach, rudd, "wild" goldfish, carp, tench, perch and bream. Rudd and carp predominate on most baits. Bream form about 5% to 10% (by numbers) of catches on bread, maggot, corn, meat and worms.

 

Fermented sultanas resulted in a bream a chuck ! Slimy skimmers, not big ones.

 

Be warned :)

Other than bait and hooks I don't suppose I shall ever need to buy another item of tackle! My bi-annual sort out the other week found unused 'must have' items that I bought several years ago. Moral of the story, buy what you really need, not what you think you may need!

think my tackle shop forays now involve:

the occasional float

a couple of packets of hooks

occasional tub of bb shot

new plumb weight...I am constantly attacked by the plumb weight fairy; who must be on benefits because he takes my plumb weight and never leaves me anything for it!!

 

and that's about it...my HUGE bag of pellets will last me all this season and probably well into next....and most baits are purchased from supermarkets!! LOL

 

however my dad and brother have been hooked by the corporates...pva tubes; quick stops, slow sinking bombs, method feeders and all manner of wot-nots that will probably only end in them spending a further 30 mins on the banks knotting it all together before casting it into the very first tree on the island they are supposedly fishing towards!!

dads trying to claw his way back from financial ruin by getting into float making again; which so far has cost me £20 on balsa bodies, cane inserts and the largest collection of sarkandas reed ive ever seen (because hes forgotten his paypal login!!)

and my brother is heading more into financial ruin by buying into the "Acme transforming Seat Box 3000 with snap on wheels, coffee cup holder and expanding rod pod extreme Z lock uber snap-on pole holder roller combo with BBQ rotisserie attachment"

he takes up 3 swims with it all fully expanded and requires a small tribe of oompa lumpas just to get it to swim in the first place!!!

Luckily such trips to the tackle shop are now rare, once a year I reckon, just restocking the few bits I need to replace. The bait can be a more regular purchase, but if I know I'll be doing a lot of a particular type of fishing I'll buy in bulk and get it cheap. This is the main thing that stung me this time, small amounts of prepared baits cost the earth! But I don't want big bags of unused bait lying around waiting for the mice to find them, so I bit the bullet this time.

 

Having said that, supermarket baits aren't necessarily cheap either. An afternoon/evening's chubbing can see me get through 8 loaves of bread, so that can be over a tenner...

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I may need to revisit my feeding strategy when chub time comes around, I usually go through one or two loaves! The Thames is a lot bigger down your way, mind.
