Losing Carp

Hi Guys, I went to my local pond recently and lost 3 fish all in the same manner , I hooked the fish on my 12ft carp rod , I felt the fish fight for about 30 seconds then all of a sudden there was nothing just left with a solid line stuck in the water about 5meters where I was fishing... can anyone help, I was using a normal setup.

Hi and welcome to Anglers' Net. I moved this topic to the coarse section so more people will see it and deleted the one you posted here since it had less information.

There will be delays in your topics/posts appearing until after you've become a full member which happens at post #15/16 so expect delays between when you post and when it can be seen.

waggy,

Welcome

The obvious answer is some sort of structure in the pond that the fish used. Did all three happen at the same location in the pond? Did you eventually get all your kit back? What do you think happened?

Some fish learn to transfer the hook in to reeds, snags etc especially at commercial waters. If it happened to me I would have cast out past where this happened and pull a lead back along the bottom checking for snags. I do this with a light bit of line attached to the end of my main line so that if it gets snagged the lead can snap off.

Don't fish for carp?

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Not sure whether I'd suggest this as an answer for all three fish, but if you'd lost a single carp in this fashion, I'd be guessing that it was very solidly into weed (though maybe it's a bit early in the year for that to be too much of an issue?

Thing is, the thicker the weed, the less far into it a carp can travel. If you go solid in this fashion again, I'd suggest that you slacken off tension on the line completely - literally a slack line to the fish - then sit and wait - maybe even 20 minutes or so if you have the patience.

If a carp IS weeded up, there is a very good chance it will come out again of it's own accord if all line tension is removed - at which point, make sure it doesn't get back in there!

As a thought, what BS line are you using? Most 12' carp rods are going to have a TC of maybe 2.5 or 3lbs, which would allow you to hold pretty much any carp out of snags, using an appropriate line.

Were you using a semi fixed safety clip and did you get the lead back or lose it?

all was fished in the same place .. i checked for snags using the led just as you have suggested and there was nothing.. i got all my set up back on all the fish mentioned. i like the idea of waiting as i dont see how the fish would have come off.

Don't let it get its head down in the weed, get it up in the water as soon as you can, give it a little bit more stick, you would be surprised how much of a bend you can put in your rod with the right type of mainline.

Can you describe your rig? (Float, feeder, line breaking strain, hook length, hook size etc. etc.) :)
