Help with phone connections

Just got broadband installed works fine.

But the phone is crap.

Have tested the phone direct into the socket on it's own and it works fine.

Probs start when the extension is pluged in to the filter creating one line to the phone in the hall and one line to the PC up stairs.

The phones go faint.

Any advice ????

I have three extension from the same phone line.

They (Freeserve) sent me three filters with my kit.

Two of which were deemed faulty by them, because they made two phones go "quiet".

Two new filters were sent immediately.

So fast in fact, that I don,t think mine was the first complaint they had received.

Now.....No Problemo.

Similar thing happened to someone I know when he had Home Highway fitted.

Dragonbat, it's their problem, not yours. Not like you to not let them know that :D

Could be something to do with the devices you've got plugged in... although with only two phones it's unlikely.

Each line has a maximum REN (stands for Ringer Equivalence Number) of 5 - each device has a REN rating, usualy shown on a sticker underneath it. If you get close to 5 or exceed it when you add up the total REN of all the phone devices - remember ansa phones count too - then that's likely to be the problem. Either use less devices or use ones that have lower REN.

The ADSL modem doesn't have any affect on the REN rating of the line though, so if this is a 'new phenomenon' then definitely get back to your ADSL supplier. Mind you... it only takes a few minutes to check the REN ratings and add them up, so if you're bored, give it a whirl.

Cheers,

Adz.

if broadband is having 2 lines to your property  (yes i live in a small village without it)

bt is under no lawfull requirement to give 2 just to you ,the other may be farmed out to another subscriber :(

errr allegedly (i saw a write up somewhere)

on the other hand i could be confused about modern technology due to the fact we have 2 busses a day (mind you it was 2 a week 10 years ago) AH technology :)

Dragon, did BT upgrade your line before you went BB? Just a thought as mine was found unsuitable and they did it for free (or at least they didn't bill me for the work)

Does the BB run at the right speed?,

I bet it is a faulty/dodgy line

hope you cure it soon,

Den

Not 100% sure from your description you are using the filters correctly, originally the broadband filter had to be fitted to the master socket, and the extensions were all run from that socket, which ment moving your master socket to wherever your computer was but with the new self installs you are supposed to split the phone line prior to filtering them so you end up needing 1 filter for every phone you have.

For what it is worth, I did a self install with an Alcatel modem and Line DSL filters. I ran a simple extension from the phone socket to a point near my PC, plugged the filter into the extension and then the modem into one of the filter sockets and another extension line into the other.

They had different sockets so I could not go wrong.

I then plugged some adaptors to enable me to run the transmitter for the remote phones (3), the ansafone, and caller display. Despite my misgivings it all worked perfectly.

I still think you have a dodgy BT line,
