Polarized sundlasses

Is they any difference in how the colour lenses work or is it just fashion & they all work the same?

Trout anglers swear by the importance of different colour tinted lenses according to light levels. Yellow in low light and Grey to Brown in brighter conditions.

I have 2 pairs of polarised glasses made by Bolle "Inshore" which are a gold/brown colour and "Offshore" which are mirrored blue lenses.

 

I had always thought the lense colour thing was over sold but it does make a huge difference. The "Inshore" is a great shallow water lense for UK game and coarse fishing and spotting fish against sand, muddy and natural coloured bottoms and a nice lense for low light conditions.

 

The blue is the business for offshore fishing in very bright sun conditions in deep blue water. You will see colour in the depths long before you would on the gold lenses.

 

I am sure others can go in to the science as to why one lense colour is better then another in different situations including light levels but it is very noticeable if you have multiple pairs and chop and change them that during different conditions one lense out performs another.

 

If they are not polarised then it is just fashion.

No, they don't all work the same. My yellow shooting glasses are a bazillion times brighter. I have several pair of polarized glasses. I like the grey (maybe gray) ones for fishing unless it is extremely bright out - then dark green. I think it is just me(?).

my understanding of shooting glasses, at least, is, that the yellow ones allow more of the light that human eyes are sensitive too though to the pupil..which is dilated by the lack of other colours being filtered across the spectrum. So more light is actually picked up by the dilated eye in the range that the eye is most sensitive to. however this also means more chance of harmful UV rays....which is why cheap sunglasses and suchlike should be avoided if they are not UV protected....hence the generally "brighter" view seen with yellow tinted shooting glasses

other colour lens work on the same principle by simply blocking or allowing through a different array of spectrum light to enhance colours etc

some people find coloured lens in their everyday use glasses help a lot if their eyes are sensitive to certain colours or suffer with headaches under fluorescent lights etc

 

everyones eyes are different...I have an old pair of "john lennons" which are deep red and I find my eyes relax really well if I wear them for an extended period....we have pupils here that require green lens....

my best suggestion is to try all you can in the situation you intend to use them...that's the only way you'll know which is best for you

"Polarized" simply cuts out the glare from flat surfaces (hood of your car, road in front of you, or, water. If your getting a pair I think it is worthwhile to get the wrap around kind. I guess that's because I don't have the wrap around kind.

I once made the mistake of buying a pair with mirrored green lenses.

Obviously that means that they reflect away the majority of green light (yes, I know that there's no such thing but the term serves a purpose) and as I do a lot of mobile fishing along heavily wooded river banks, that meant that I couldn't see my feet.

I stick to amber or smoke lenses these days unless I'm in the tropics where mirrored blue are easier on the eyes.

 

I actually prefer glass lenses but don't use them in the UK because they are far to prone to steaming up - siomething that isn't an issue in warmer climes

It's that scarry yellow thing in the sky that you saw on hollidat Andy.....
