at least it wasnt killed just to be mounted in a trophy case as the victorians might have done or knocked on the head just to win a competition. only done one competition & couldnt believe that "anglers" would kill so many fish that they didnt want to eat, just for the prize money.

great story leon, have copied it to my fishing buddy conservator in new york, maybe it will get to him before the asbury park paper hits his door

Lastly if you don't want a heated debate , don't start one.

Oh and in defence of my right to make a valid point. 'Up yours'

You made a point, I challenged it, and there seems to be a lot of support here and elsewhere for leaving the kid to his happy moment. However, degenerating to "up yours" in your reply shows that we are not likely to have much of an intelligent debate on the subject. :D

'Please dont spoil other peoples happy moments with your projected guilt trips.

However, degenerating to "up yours" in your reply shows that we are not likely to have much of an intelligent debate on the subject.

All things considered I thought you deserved such a response for dismissing me with a bit of arrogant Freudian claptrap. Besides, I though you made it clear that you didnt want a debate.

'there seems to be a lot of support here and elsewhere for leaving the kid to his happy moment.

There is also clearly a lot of support for the notion of giving the fish an even happier moment. I supect the kid if he continues to fish for stripers will one day look back on that day with more than a few regrets.

Jaffa:

M8 i don't disagree with the whole catch and release thing at all, i just think it would be great if our stocks were at the level that uk guys putting back a 58lb bass were able to enjoy a youngsters excitement in keeping his lifetime fish.

Its just a boy who has hoooked the fish of his life. 10 yrs from now he may well be an advocate of catch and release.....

Well put Jaffa.

I have the first large fish I ever caught hanging on my wall. Dad had it mounted for me and we both were proud of the catch.

These days I release almost all my fish but I have never had a second's regret over keeping that one.

I doubt you'd find hardly any US anglers who'd be other than happy for a youngster getting a large fish or unhappy he decided to keep it.

Now if the same youngster made a habit of killing large fish for no reason, you would probably find some who'd object. If he or any others made a habit of keeping way too many large fish to allow a fishery to continue to be productive, you'd find lots more who strongly objected.

Nope. :(

I'd love one but the wife is adamantly opposed.

I also liked these but herself said No Way. Not that I'm hen pecked, you understand, but .....
