Say hi to Ray

Yesterday had me trying out a new mark which had been kindly given to me by Salar, the weather was perfect and the sea smooth.

Had to paddle straight out from the launching point for about 10-15 minutes, until I was in about 30 feet of water, now this is deep for my local area. I dropped anchor uptide from another boat. Heard the guys laughing not sure whether it was at me or not, anyway they didn't look like they were catching.

They up'd anchor and left.

I had some squid in the freezer so had brought that a long and decided to chuck that out on a 4/0 and try rag and squid on a 2 hook paternoster with blade.

After getting a bass of about 2lb on the rag, I decided to let a little line out on main bait, letting it travel downtide, it seemed to be gaining a bit of speed, so I thumbed the spool and there was fish on, this turned out to be my first Thornback. Fantastic.

Took a quick photo and sent a bait out again. 10 minutes later I had a proper take, felt a couple of tugs and it was fish on again, this time a bigger Thornback with great markings, it was a lot heavier than the first, but being a doughnut I didn't think about weighing it until I had returned it, felt about 4lb though.

Apart from being surrounded by thousands of tiny schools of fish every 20 minutes, that was it.

Thanks to Salar for a great mark.

Well done starvin, still one to cross of my list.

How did it feel once it was on.You know a bass runs,a pollack dives-what does a ray do and would you recognize one again once you had it hooked?

Jon.

Musket, the first one didn't feel a thing I was just feeding out some line using thumb pressure and it started to pick up speed.

The second ray (the one in the picture) it was a definite two hard knocks, very distinctive compared with the other species I've caught, fantastic, I'll be out there again soon, weather permitting.

Cheers Yakity,

The first rays markings were really dull in comparison, thought it was a diffent species to start with. :)
