I have said it before, and I will say it again...I fished a water which had seen the heavy use of tiger nuts and later on Brazil nuts, and the fish grew steadily bigger and bigger and bigger each year for almost 30 years, reaching weights up to 46lbs.

For the record this was LSA Sutton at Hone.

Also happened at LSA Larkfield complex (now MKF)

How does one gauge the reason that fish "stop growing" does one catch and measure a considerable number of fish over a considerable period of time and then repeat the exercise?

I suppose if you catch a specific fish each year and weigh and measure it and then introduce nuts ( and ensure it eats them? ) then you may get a result which can be attributed, but I fail to see any evidence of this in the waters I have fished.

I don`t think its the fishery owners trying to grab a few quid, but I think its the owners looking after their fish stock.

Due to many particles/nuts expanding when they`re prepared properly and some anglers not preparing them properly this is what I think and know of one lake why they`re banned.

There was several fish that was found dead due to expanded stomachs, when they was examined, unprepared particles (well partially) was found in their stomachs.

The particles had expanded so much that they`d killed the fish, since that day all seed, nuts and pulses have been banned.

Si - can you explain the physiology of that? I've read it before but have never been able to really understand exactly what happens to cause a fish death.

Not doubting it exactly, but absolutely can't understand it.

I've opened up a good few fish over the years (helps to know what they are eating to figure out what bait to use) and their gut is very elastic. I've caught 5lb bass with 2lb bass swollowed all but a little of the tail. I've caught carp that had been feasting on literally tons of dry maize (dumped as waste byproducts from grain processing plants) and seen them hale & hearty but not seen others around floating dead or even acting like they were in any sort of distress.

Fantastic post guys! As a newcomer to carp fishing (first season specifically targeting carp but been a fisherman for nearly thirty years) it's great to realise the level of experience and expertise (scientific and practical) that my fellow forum members posess. Cheers! ;)

On the lake I'm fishing at the moment only peanuts are banned. These seem to be the ultimate no-no as one guy fishing them was instantly banned for life and made to pack up and was escorted from the lake. Was this an over-reaction or are they really that bad?

....Here's to swimming with bow-legged women....

Peanuts themselves aren't bad for the fish. As noted by several folks here, maybe not particularly nourishing but not intrinsically harmful in reasonable quantities.

Problem with them is if they were improperly stored - damp area usually - they can contain aflatoxins which are harmful to people and often fatal to fish. The fungus Aspergillus flavis is usually the culprit and while it can be found on maize, it is more often seen on peanuts.

If the nuts are human food grade, there is not a problem since they will have been tested before being packaged for sale.
