Cralusso Surf Float

Tried one of these on the river thurne which is a slow tidal river.

At first I was disappointed as I probably expected to drop it off the end of my rod and see it shoot across the river with me steering it with rod tip.

It doesn't do that at all. However after playing with it I started to see what it could do. The river is a bream, roach river. At times they will only take a static bait and this is where the surf was good for me. I could get it to hold station mid river which allowed me to enjoy some bream/skimmer fishing. It wouldn't stay out too much further than rod and it was a case of practicing and getting used to it.

I think in hindsight I still prefer a big stick float with my 20ft light rod as I find it easier to then trot through or return to overdepth easier than the surf. However I still have a couple and no doubt will use them again..

Incidentally all crallusso floats are brilliant in their design. I love their big sliders.

I've got a couple you can have a play with, bought them and never got round to doing owt with them.

Thank's P sounds good to me bud, no doubt i'll see you before the season starts. There'd be no problem trying them during the closed season so long as we don't have a hook attatched.

As confirmed by the EA;

"Dear Chris

Thank you for your email regarding fishing closed season.

You would not be committing an offence by testing out new fishing equipment providing you are not actively trying to catch fish. If you were to be reported or approached by a bailiff it would be possible to explain what you were doing to them............."

My club is a little more hesitant to commit either way so I'm going to find a secluded spot and give it a try over the weekend.

Aint that about right though! The official body is quite happy and can see the sense but the tin pot local commitee man cant!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I gave it a try today and it does work. The float takes a bit of setting up and the shotting has to be right (slightly overshot) but after some practice I did manage to get it to surf to the far bank.

This vid shows early attempts, the float's hard to see so you have to follow the line. The bubbles show the current angling towards the near bank and I was mightily impressed that the float still managed to move away from me. I've got a much better one on the camera which refuses to copy over to my PC, once I sort that out I'll post up;

Just got back from overnight interrogation by the EA, somebody grassed!

This video’s a lot better for showing the float’s capabilities. I found that for it to work properly you have to keep the line out of the water, also when you retrieve the float has a tendency to sink and wobble about, it feels just like you’ve caught a fish. If you get the retrieve right though and keep the float on the surface you can make it go upstream hugging the far bank.

I was using the 6g version which has a bigger vane, the 4g float wouldn’t traverse the river in the relatively fast flow but might be better in slower current.

It’s good fun, more practice required;

More surfing frippery, starting to get the hang of it now.

The vid was cut short when uploading failed, I did get it back and later had two perch from that spot. Edit: the whole video seems to be there despite the 'failed upload' message.
