Fracking

There is a swim on the Medway in Penshurst where the "barbel" is always bubbling :) I spent quite a while trying to induce a take from it :) :) Finally gave up and got up close enough to see the stream of bubbles oozing from under the edge of a rock shelf :bye2::bye2:

Den

When I first observed the bubbles I was about 14. In later years when I became interested in Earth Sciences, I collected some of the gas in a small jar, and yes it was flammable.

After a trip to Australia, and taking out an amateur prospector's licence there (still have a few small rubies and sapphires in a tin somewhere to show for my prospecting) I wondered if there was a similar scheme in the UK. Investigated, found there wasn't. AFAIK, there still isn't, so as you can't "strike it rich" by reporting mineral finds the exact location is something I keep to myself.

You are living in the wrong part of the UK. One can still pan for gold in Scotland.

Yes, have done that (Kinbrace Burn) and in Wales also

However, finding a few grains for interest's sake is one thing, stuffing 34 g under your mattress is something else. I'm surprised yon laddie has not aroused the interest of various parasites (Customs and Excise etc) looking for a cut.

As far as hydrocarbons are concerned, I think the state claims them all, but its a long time since I checked. So make with your search engines, guys, an update would be useful.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

In Sutherland? I didn't know you were an explorer.

Thanks for that, Nick - it hasn't changed much since I last checked, many years back.

So my "reward" for reporting a hydrocarbon seepage would be "thank you and p:ss off" I think the secret may well die with me.......

Yep, took my kids on a geological tour of the UK when in their formative years.

No 1 daughter eventually became a structural geologist and is now at the cutting edge of hydrocarbon exploration and research at the University of Texas. She writes papers so complicated I can't even understand their titles :):)

I wish my parents had been a bit more like you. I had a passion for geology in my adolescence, but I got a hard time for bringing home "chuckie stanes" and scratching all the furniture with my finds.

Close to where I was brought up is one of the few places where the Highland Boundary Fault is visible on the surface.

I have two cousins that are petro-chemists. Both of them work in "Little Texas" AKA Aberdeen.
