When I put the epoxy on my rings I used a cordless drill with a cable tie on the trigger tightened JUST enough to spin the rod once every twenty seconds (the slowest I could get it to go).

I also used a polestyrene fish box with grooves cut into it to support it so i could leave it for a couple of hours and come back when a skin had formed on the epoxy.

I know thats not to do with the actual whipping but it might help with the overall building.

Yes that is good advice Geoff, thanks. I probably won't go to such lengths for a perfect finish though. Most of my tackle is perfectly servicable, but looks like a bag of sh*t! A nicely whipped rod would look out of place in my shed

I went out and bought a new set of Fuji rings for an old Shakespeare Ugly Stik today. I bought the rod about 4 or 5 years ago to go with my old original one which I bought in 1979. My old one had to have new rings fitted years ago and the Fuji's made a great rod even better. The second Ugly Stik still had the original Shakespeare rings on it, and although they were still in good nick, they have to go!

I've just sat and whipped the first ring on and it's giving me brain damage! I haven't done any whipping for a good few years and I forgot how fiddly and boring it is. Only 6 more to do plus the tip and a bit of decorative whipping by the butt. Yippee :bye2:

Use the thickest thread you can get!

Next time don't be so tight and give the rod to me for whipping and then i won't go bust....... :P

You're right. That will probably be the last rod I do. My local tackle shop charges £5 a ring to supply and fit, which is a bargain really.

I'm now up and down turning the rod every couple of minutes as the high build cures. What a way to spend an evening!

You can buy turning motors from the likes of H&H for not very much money. Ringed a new rod on Thursday night, put on high build and left turning overnight - perfect job.
