Anyone done this yet? How would your boss react?

I'm expected to check my email on holiday :(

What if you can't? I'd just make sure that I only went on holiday to places that were beyond the reach of broadband and Wi-Fi.

You can go and holiday with my aunt. 20 miles from nowhere. No TV, The nearest telephone exchange is about 12 miles away so no broadband, if you want to make a call on a mobile phone you'll need to drive about 6 miles before you can get a signal, or hoof it half way up the nearest hill. On the plus side you can open her living room window and spit in Loch Katrine ;)

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Basically, having wifi or 3G is a requirement for anywhere I want to go on holiday. We're a small company, I am the IT department from development to first line support, if stuff goes wrong there's nobody else to fix it.

similar here;

im one of two IT techs at the school/college. if im on holiday the other guy has basically an entire week on his own firefighting issues and problems...if the crapola hits the fan I like to be contactable....not because ive been told that's the case, but simply because that's how I am!

there has been occasion where we have both had a week off at the same time during the summer hols...we were called up to be told that a plumber had somehow managed to flood the entire basement and server room! he left a small sump pump trying to pump out the entire schools water system over night!!

entire server room about 2 foot underwater!!

its times like that when being contactable is a godsend.

Mine was definitely "out of office" ,if i was really so important my wages would have been trebled ,they weren't so i was unavailable and sorted it all out on returning

My sister is self-employed and gets "can you" emails night and day ,in her case to say no or ignore is not wise

If I done that I would be fired, and quite rightly so. if I received an email like that I would really consider if I wanted to do business with them.

when I went on holiday all my emails were setup to forward to the boss automatically so no intervention from me needed. still got calls nearly every day though from the boss "how do I do this, who viewed that property last week, wheres the milk! blah blah blah. :doh:

Yep. Most of my family just don't understand how it works.

When my wife worked on the payments system of a building society, she was on call much of the time. Family didn't really get that either, though perhaps we should have told them what the on call rate was. Now she's a senior project manager running a massive project, she's not on call at all, but then she's at bloody work all the hours anyway!

So who was the perlonker that decided to put a data centre in a basement?
