Elton, at the end of the day your ONLY choice is to go Landrover, the model you choose is up to you. I am prepared to put a challenge up on here for any of these guys to try and complete.

OK..here's some competition.

It's really too bad that Jeep dropped the original small frame Cherokee(yeah...I know, over there they market the Liberty as a Cherokee...it's a vastly inferior replacement, at least from an off-road standpoint).

I drive a 96 Cherokee, has 123 thousand miles on it, and I've only ever had it in the shop for oil changes, new tires, and to replace a water pump.

From an off-road standpoint...those who have owned both them and Rovers..will attest that they will go anyplace a rover can, and perhaps even with a bit less fuss and bother. They have a somewhat better(at least over here) reputation then Rover for reliablity, at least as far as major components go. Rock solid drive train and engine, and excellent 4 wheel drive system. Exceptional in deep sand or mud, as they weigh much less then other similar sized vehicles. They are at least here, widely available as good second hand vehicles. I know they were sold over there, so you might look into one.

Here is mine, stuck just today in civilization(parking lot of my condominium).

If you want loads of space, lots of extras, power and comfort, fantastic amount of metal for your money and your not too preoccupied with image then you could look at a Ford Explorer. If you want a serious offroader then a Nissan patrol is the one. I've just got back from Qatar and thats all they use for dune bashing.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

OK, Jeeps are nice for some things, Do me a favour, Park it on a real bad uneven surface, take your fishing tackle out the back and then see if you can shut the boot

A wee bit :offtopic:, but I would not mind this landie. and this forward control looks pretty cool too.

The 3/4 you have posted is the one I refer to, In the military it is comonly called a 3/4 FFR.

The 'forward Control' is a one ton Landrover normally used as a command post or Ambulance. They are a beautiful piece of work, I don't think it would suit Elton, The 3/4 is bad enough but the 1 ton does about 9 miles per gallon. Which is a damn site worse than my 4.6 RangeRover which averages 12! :schmoll:

i had a cherokee for a few years, loved it, found it much better in every respect than the 1971 landrover 109 i owned at the same time. in many ways it was the perfect fishing wagon. let me down in only one way, i couldnt sleep fully stretched out in the back with the seats folded down, that's why i bought an explorer. which is as good off road, can carry more people, more luggage, goes faster, uses less fuel...... i like my explorer :)

huge, get over your land rover fixation, we've all had one at one point or another, but most of us have got over ours. yes they're good, and yes i think about buying one everytime i see the silver 05 plate 90 in the next village to us, but they're not the be all and end all of 4x4s. everywhere i've been where people rely on their vehicles for their lives, let alone their livelyhoods, rwanda, congo, the falklands, qatar etc etc they use patrols or landcruisers, they don't break, and they don't get stuck :)

huge, get over your land rover fixation,

I don't have one matey, I have had various vehicles, the main reason why I change them is 'cause I get bored and try something else. Each has a good point as each has a bad, A vehicle which is better at towing over long distance is not going to have the same charactaristics as a vehicle with low ratio, mid range torque, low attack etc etc etc.

Elton asked for a vehicle to use as a 'second' vehicle to use occasionally over short distances for fishing trips etc.

To my view the fact that you don't have to throw out £190 per year (or whatever) for VED and you get fully comp insurance (with 0 years no claims bonus) for about £70 a year makes an older Landrover worth considering.

As I pointed out before. IF you want to tow a boat for miles listening to your CD with the air con on then go JAP, can't make it any simpler.

If money is not an issue then Balls to the JAP and YANKS.

thing is huge, in a wildcat, where would you put your tackle?

and as for your earlier comment about the japs not prducing anything like a wildcat, you've never seen the pikes peak suzukis then?

a '98 ish cherokee can be yours for about 1200 quid now, with around 100,000 miles, buy one and enjoy it, don't bother with a cold, rough, bouncy land rover, why bother when you can buy a less than 10 year old car, knowing it will start every morning, the heater works and you won't shake your spine to bits on the way to your peg

:)

Not a clue what a boot is!

But...If it's a referal to the tailgate...then not quite sure what the issue is.

I assume it's a claim that the tailgate won't close on an uneven surface?

The uniframe chassis is actualy a bit stiffer then a body on frame vehicle, and that has never been a problem. And as Newt may attest(from some of my older posts on other forums), I DO use the jeep the way the creator intended..trust me on that one;)

Point being...Elton asked for an inexpensive but I assume, capable 4 wheel drive. The Jeep is every bit as off-road capable as any land rover...period. Note..I did not say MORE capable...but just AS capable.

But, I never have puddles of "mystery fluid" on the drive in the morning, and it starts up every time, even when the temp here hit's 40 below zero(yes..it gets that cold), and it gets me to my destination even if I have 5 foot snow drifts in the way:D

(I think discussion cars is a bit like discussing the opposite sex in some ways..not quite sure HOW, but just seems that way....)
