National Anthems

I am true blue English, but I think our National anthem is pathetic compared to the Italian or French ones.

Totally uninspiring, especially if trying to rouse a crowd of supporters at a footy match.

"When through the woods and forest glades I wanderAnd hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,And hear the brook, and feel the breeze;and see the waves crash on the shore,Then sings my soul..................

Interesting, Den. I've never cared for "The Star Spangled Banner", myself. Especially after hearing Rosanne Barr's wretched rendition some years ago. Besides, what kind of anthem begins with, "Jose can you see?" :D

Got to be better than ours Sev, I have heard a few rousing renditions of it :)

I reckon the Italian anthem is a bit of daft semi-operatic poop.

An American friend reckoned their anthem was the "least singable" anthem in the world ;)

I like the French+Russian anthems, and used to like the E.German one.

Rosanne did butcher the poor thing, didn't she Sev? I've heard the song butchered every which way. Seems the anthem should be something people can proudly sing along with. My choices would be "America the Beautiful" or "God Bless America". Both still bring tears to my eyes.

when we changed ours to Advance Australia Fair ( which is great when sang by the kids choir ) there was a big push for it to be Waltzing Matilda

which is just about recognised round the world as Austalian, most Aussies would know the words to that and sad to say most dont know the words to Advance Australia Fair.

my mind not only wanders-- sometimes it leaves completely.
