Mines Yellow (the Kayak that is) If they like yellow kayaks, what a lure tie a few hooks around the yak, I'l get Prowler and trev to troll it and lets see if we can get some shark steaks for tea. Yum Yum.

 

I will watch from a safe distance just in case.

I can understand the rush of being up close to such a magnificant animal. Although I've read that the continous baiting of sharks into dive boats will have some implications sooner or later.

They do that for the tourists - there is a big tourist shark seeing industry in Hermanus, about 5 or 6 boats take people out and lure them up like that.

 

The breaching shot looks more to be False Bay though - that looks like the stretch of coast between Gordon's Bay and Pringle Bay to me. There are also tourist boats operating out of Simonstown to take shark viewers out to seal island - where most of the filming takes place. They use seal dummies towed behind the boat and the sharks breach at the dummies - also big chunks of tuna or other fish to lure them beside the boat like these pictures.

 

I heard that one of the lifeguards that we went out to photograph lost his foot to a shark the other day during a practise exercise - he went from being pretend casualty to real casualty. The lifeguards and NSRI guys are working in these waters on a daily basis with that risk as just part of their daily routine - bloody heroes.
