my PB was 27lb 4 oz about 5 years ago in the basingstoke canal. but i took a 22lb 3 oz beauty from my local lake a few weeks ago...

Spot on Newt.

 

The important thing is that the fish was caught and the captor was pleased about catching it. What the pike actually weighed does not matter very much, and what someone else thought it weighed matters not at all.

i tend to work in reverse, that is to say i am trying to beat by pb for the smallest pike. Last month caught one that was barey ten ounces, it beat my previous best smallest that was 1 lb

Absolutely right vagabond, if topps enjoyed catching it then the size is immaterial, the fish doesnt look any bigger than 5lb but as mentioned above pics can be misleading, plus it could be that topps was using an 100 inch spoon net

By the way topps, just out of interest, did the fish get unhooked and returned alive?

If your into piking, check out the PACGB website for some very useful tips on handling, unhooking and suitable tackle.

Always put the pikes welfare as your main priority when fishing for them.

looks like its been through the battles, got to say though ( aint calling you a liar ) but it defo doesnt look 17lb. try putting somthing next to fish like a pack of cigarettes or somthing people can use for size comparison, im going by the size of that label on the net but its dificult cause i dont know what size it is in real life.

 

anyways my pb is around 10-12lb it fell to a shad, i put my foot near to it for size comparrison ( size 9 ), and the shad is 4"

Sure, if he enjoyed catching it that's the main thing. And it's great to see young enthusiastic anglers fishing for pike and putting them back.

 

But if you are going to weigh fish and tell people the weight then you should get it right.

 

Maybe he genuinely read the scales at 17.5lb in his exitement, so it might be worth checking them.
