The Abu Krill

I'm wondering about the famous 'Abu Krill' Spinner, I've always wondered why it dis-appeared from the shelves at the end of the 80s, and only in the past few years has been re-introduced? does anyone know if there was any apparent reason?

In my younger days learning to fish, spinning from the shore for Mackerel and Pollack, the 'Abu Krill' was seen as the Rolls Royce of spinners among me and my friends ... I think back with great fondness of catching many fish with them, and then been upset when you got snagged and lost them and then patiently waiting for the tide to go out to hopefully retrieve the prized spinner from among the rocks and kelp.

Yup it was the same here tis the best spinner ever..... from what I can gather the cost of producing them is what killed them off, I think it was the constant demand for them to be re introduced and new manufaturing methods that go them brought back.

I still have one or two originals left (bought a lifetime's supply back in the 60's) Excellent for saithe and pollack. Glad to know they are back in the tackle shops - in case my lifetimes supply runs out before my lifetime :D

There was also a baby krill, which I found very good for estuary sea-trout (in the good old days before salmon farming)

Anothe "golden oldie" from ABU was the "Shiner" - a solid pirk-like lure covered with transparent plastic. Caught quite a few pollack from deep rock marks with them - must take my remaing three to the Isle of Muck someday.

Got one large and one small Egon left - agreed it was not so good as other ABU lures - still got some "Kosters" too.

Might have guessed you would have had some

We never did well with the "Koster" in Loch Long for some reason.... could have had something to do with the lack of sprats.

I love the way old lures were displayed in boxes, something to behold and treasure, whereas modern ones get bunged in a blister pack:

The Abu Krill is my favourite bass lure. I bought some off of ebay a few years ago and they were rubbish. Went rusty in no time. Maybe they were copies? These ones didn't come in a proper Abu packaging, though,m so maybe alarm bells should hav erung.

My one remaining original doesn't have a sign of any rust.
