Steve,

Not sure I have the understanding for your post as you meant it.

If you're saying the US is not perfect RIGHT ON! But I seriously doubt you were making that naïve statement. What did I miss?

(example: Our mayor was just reelected by a total voter turn out of 11% of all registered voters. How can that be "government by the people)?

Point was that you are a similarly sized (bit smaller, 320m vs 500m) country which is much more culturally homogenous and everyone is signed up to the same national identity, yet it's still not easy - imagine trying to run something where you have 28 culturally and economically diverse countries and people tend to identify with their home country rather than the whole.

Luckily the EU controls its entities with concent to a point ,the EU is very similar to the US in that american states have the illusion of independent thought but can be overruled in law or by force by washington ,luckily at the moment the EU controls by law but a natural step (and has been suggested) a european army could force its states into line enforcing laws by force not concent

Whether ofcourse a european army would so easily be brainwashed into acting against its own bretheren like american security forces do is doubtful though but ofcourse if you exclude the military from the state you need to force to comply most of the remainder for historical reasons would only be to happy to settle old scores ,individual countries armies could only form a guerrilla force nothing more, from open borders to federal state by force is not what we signed up to in 74

As for all americans singing from the same hymn book is doubtful when people have bumper sticker displaying texan and proud or similar things shows cultural differences are just under the surface nicely bringing us back to americas civil war

If states or countries dont like whats forced on them revolt ,if you all die at least you died for your own beliefs not ones from someone else forced apon you ,rise up you southerners get rid of the northern interlopers that rule your lives (insert confederate war cry here)

I have always found it ludicrous people deliberately vote in people to have power over them ,its crazy ,its even more crazy we dont vote in the EU decision makers at all ,its a crazy world some find completely normal its a wonder we got out of our caves at all

.......28 culturally and economically diverse countries and people tend to identify with their home country rather than the whole.

Soon after our entry into the Common Market I found myself in discussion with a pro-US of Europe Frenchman.

"The trouble with you British" he said, "is that you don't regard yourselves as European"

"Too right, Serge" I replied, "just as Corsicans and Bretons do not even regard themselves as French - long may it remain so"

Steve.

Ahh - rightly so. In school boy history we were taught America is what it is because of a common language, common currency and cheap efficient transportation.
