Thanks :D

Budgie, thats for really putting my mind at rest, you seem to have a vast knowledge of using braid on all types of rods.

This is my last question, I promise, I normally use 10lb mono, should I use 10lb braid or go for 15lb ?

Like you, I used to use 10lb mono for light/medium spinning. I'm currently using 20lb Power Pro. Not only is it stronger, but it's also thinner than 10lb mono, resulting in longer casts on a fixed spool reel.

Bear in mind that braid is a lot less abrasion resistant than mono of the same breaking strain. Power Pro is one of the better ones in this respect.

The best I've found for abrasion resistance though is Nash Bullet Braid, even taking into account that its breaking strain is under-rated compared with other braids. I've used 15lb Bullet Braid to replace 10lb mono in the past.

However, I still prefer 20lb Power Pro, because of its low diameter. I've had only 1 cut off with it, and that I might have got whatever the line.

With a multiplier I'd suggest you go for the same diameter as 10lb mono, whatever the breaking strain. This is because the diameter of the line has much less effect on how far you can cast with a multiplier. However, I don't currently use multipliers so I'm not talking from first hand experience here, as I am with fixed spools.

P.S. Even then I'd add that I've never used braid for barbel fishing.

J.K Ten pound is a bit on the heavy for Avon style of fishing, the traditional Avon style was an X3 cast or in new money 5lb. I think if you look at modern Avon rods the maximum is around 6lb which is in keeping with tradition. As for using braid with an Avon style it go against the grade and I also think you will lock the rod up on big fish which may cause damage to the rod and the fish.

Budgie's experience with braid and rings matches up with mine. I use PowerPro almost exclusively in B/S from 15lb to 80lb on rods with really good rings and really cheap rings. No ring damage from the line and my catfish rods have spent time with some decent fish putting a serious bend in the rods.

Can't speak to mono for hooklengths since I don't use them but I will go with a lighter b/s braid hooklength and that works fine for me.

I have read some reports of ring damage from folks using the kevlar-added braids (sinking and more abrasion resistant) but no first hand experience with it so at this point, I put that right along with the folks who offer to split $10 million with me if I will help them out. I do think that if I were ever to use those sorts of braid I'd make sure I had top quality ceramic ring inserts since I doubt the line could cut into that.

Steve - I do use braid on multipliers and I do match diameter rather than b/s although I usually go with a slightly lower diameter than the recommended mono. Works fine. Seemed to do OK with the egg beater reels back when I used them too and still does on my spod rod which is the only one still rigged with fixed spool.

Have to respectfully disagree, in this instance, you can set the reel drag according to the rod, thus no locking up and no damage to rod or fish.

i too have to disagree with old tonys post, i use braid with my avon rod, (10 or 15lb powerpro with a 1.5lb tc drennan super specialist) and i've never had a problem

Thanks for your help .. really appriciated. I have been using 10lb line on my JW rod for lots of seasons now, its has alot more power that you think, espicially with the heaviest quiver top on, the rod bends really well.

Looks like I will on the look out for some 15lb power pro with a 10lb berkly big game mono hooklength.

Thanks again

The point I think as been missed, Avon rod is for Avon style of fishing the traditional was an X3 cast or in new money 5lb. The JW Avon system rod or old original Avon is only rated at maximum 6lb why do you think this is? 10lb is a bit like cracking a nut with a lump hammer. There is a point were the reel drag will not help, if you hook a 10lb plus Barbel what use is drag when the fish is already in the snag? I some times go Chub fishing with a fly rod rated at 6/7 but I do know its limitations or maybe I should beef it up with some 10lb line that should do the trick.

Your point wasn't missed at all, but I do believe that your statement regarding inevitable locking up of rods and damage to fish was simply incorrect.
