John Wilson Avon Rod

I have a Mk1 JW Avon which I bought cheaply.

I agree with Steve Burke about the Avon tip being lifeless - there's probably more life in a 3 day old cadaver.

I also felt there was a huge flat spot around the spigot area, which is fine if you're catching stuff that hasn't got weight.

My biggest gripe, though is the rubber reel grips. I had to use a lot of caster oil to get them to bite on my centrepin's feet. Before this I managed to drop my 'pin in the brook running out of Pennington Flash - which necessitated a complete strip down of the reel, oiling and re-build - less than 6 weeks after having it serviced!

It kinda helps with my jaundiced point of view! I refuse to accept that it was at all my fault for being useless! :headhurt::unsure::blink:

Just to prove it can be used in the margins with a small float for tench & to have a look at it with a bend in it. You can blame Vagabond for the pic quality.post-10964-1181826073_thumb.jpgpost-10964-1181826122_thumb.jpg

Well I've decided, and I've brought a Drennan series 7 Avon quiver. I compared it in the shop to the TFG stream rod. The Drennan rod has more smaller rings (the TFG rods rings were few and large). Initially I preferred the TFG rod as it is marginally lighter and a thinner blank, however when comparing the two, the Drennan rod has a more responsive tip and more power in the middle sections and the TFG rod is more floppy, the Drennan rod is wonderfully stiff despite having a more forgiving tip!

The Drennan rod is quite new to the market I think, it comes with 3 quiver tips. I quite like it but its not perfect ... I'd like slightly larger legged rings, a thinner blank and a longer handle but otherwise its ok!

I had a milo 11ft and a 12ft avon that I was very happy with for stalking chub.

I have broken my 11ft which was by far the best rod and suited my upper narrow reach sections of river that I like to pull a few chub out of.

So I am now looking for a replacement as there are now no new milo's. It must be 11ft and I much prefer a spliced in tip. I would consider a drennan series 7 as I have several of there series 7 rods and all are great for money but I have only seen a 12ft version of avon. And of course they have normal tips. I presume though that the tps that fit avons are the same as all their other tips so interchangeable. this is why I have generally bought drennan tip rods as I have had other brilliant tip rods but when you brake a tip you can never find a replacement.

Any thoughts on which rod wiuld be most appreciated

thanks

Do you want a twin top rod or a quiver rod? The TFG rod I mentioned above is a Total Fishing X1 River & Stream 11' you might like that, you can swap the quiver tip out of the quiver section but it is only supplied with one quiver tip unlike the drennans 3 tips. I'm sure you'd be able to use fairly standard tips with it? I wanted a longer rod and preferred the drennan rod for the reasons I mentioned above!

I've got a MKI that I used for years. I like it, though I know where Steve Burke is coming from, and I agree with Mat that it doesn't cast a light float well at all. Thing is, I bought it for barbel, chub and tench. I have a 13' match rod and a 'match-picker' style light quivertip rod for smaller species, but with the exception of a 9' spinning rod the JW was for years the heaviest coarse rod I owned. Still would be, if I hadn't replaced it with a 1.5lb tc rod as I still don't own a "carp" or "pike" rod. So for what I used it for, I was happy with it. The place it occupied in my armoury was more "light carp rod" than "heavy match rod". I've replaced it with a 1.5lb tc Drennan Super Specialist avon quiver, which I will admit is a far better rod, particularly for fishing a waggler for tench. So it should be, though, given that it was a fair bit more expensive and a much newer design. I still use the JW when I want to set a spare rod up. I don't usually fish two rods at once, but if I did I would happily use it beside the Drennan, provided I could bear the ignominy of being seen fishing with unmatched rods...

I have two avons one by ahem shakespeare and one buy leeda the clubmaster and blue diamond 11and 12 ft respectivly now the clubmaster long discontinued has a newer version in 11ft

no idea how good it is but the clubmaster had high profile rings to aid float control the main reason i bought it over the daiwa and original JW avon I was considering

As 'The Rod' has been mentioned again in a number of recent threads I was wondering how many section it broke down into and what the length was when broken down. I'll looking for a rod that I can use for both float and feeder fishing but wouldn't struggle to get on a bus.

It's not that short, see the picture of the parts at http://www.bosfish.co.uk/products/RODS/ma595specialist.htm.

The Avon top is the longest part at about 5½ feet.

The cork handle does detach, this is not shown in the picture.
