What I found particularly interesting (and rather worrying) was the huge variation in breaking strain results for the same line. It appears that the figures given for breaking stain are the average of 5+ tests. I'd have like to have seen the lowest figure as well, as this is even more relevant.

 

It's interesting that the knot tests varied as well. Jim Gibbinson found the same, and pointed out that the best knot depended both on the brand and the breaking strain of the line.

It's also a shame that they didn't specify the line that hey were joining to for the leader results.

 

Mind you, it certan'y explains why I'm fo confident fishing 10lb Fireline on my light spinning outfit, even where good pike are likely.

Interesting that with a good knot, 20lb approaches the same breaking strain as 50lb.

 

Except for the extra abrasion resistance provided by the larger line, this makes a pretty good case for using 20/30 lb braid.

For me, the interesting bit was the confirmation that if I fish 20lb fireline and uni-knott it to a heavy flouro leader, I'm looking at a full 20lb BS conection, even if the knot is a weak point.

I use 20lb braid for deepwater drift wrecking. Super stuff. Any dyneema braid is good, i don't like any of the coated braids though.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

First and foremost, if a line breaks at 50lb then it can't be 20lb. Knots do not increase a lines strength.

 

If your line sometimes breaks at 20, and sometimes at 50, then either you have a dodgy lot of 50lb line, or your knots are no good.

 

Design your knot to stop it slipping and strangling, and you can get almost the full BS of the line.

 

Test your line without knots first, then after being knotted, that will tell you whether your knot is any good.

 

I did a LOT of testing lines and knots, both mono and braid, and the makes I tested all broke according to the knot used. I found very little variation in the actual line itself.

 

For what it's worth, twice thro the eye and 4 turn blood gave/gives me an almost 100% knot strength with braid with all three braids I tried.

 

The No Knot knot is almost 100% as well.

 

 

Some of my tests involved leaving the knot under strain for several hours, and often overnight.
