Winzip

It is the minimum level of encryption required these days when moving confidential or secure data such as credit card numbers. The zip file is therefore password protected as a result.

What does anyone need winzip for these days? Are you all running ancient versions of Windows? Windows ME or newer handles zip files natively.

Yes, but native windows compressed file handling doesn't support the encryption levels required to move personal or financial data.

Fair comment, but don't most people use compression programs purely to compress/decompress non-sensitive data for transport? Encryption is a more specialist requirement, I'd say.

Best thing with sensitive data is to bung it on a CD and whack it in the post.

Well, according to the powers that run this country, that is :D

Our company also uses WinZip (& ZipMail) because of the same reason.

(just in case someone reads this and takes this seriously) Not really thats about the worst thing you want to do with this type of data.

But if you are absolutely sure that you will always only need to compress/decompress non-sensitive data for transport then I should think you would be ok with something less secure; but it's nice to be aware of its limitations.
