  1. 1. Smoking or Non-smoking? If the pubs / clubs and bingo hall managers had the choice of Smoking or Non-Smoking for their estasblishment , what would the majority vote be?

One last post on this thread, the hardest hit venues to date are not pubs or clubs, 100 plus bingo halls have closed their doors due to a large drop of in attendance, I can vouch for that as three of the biggest in Llanelli and Swansea have shut, two being part of a national circuit.

I know that two of our local pubs are up for sale in a bid to get out with something, I could name them but it would not be correct to do so.

I have come to the conclusion that non-smokers will not keep traditional rural pubs viable and many will close, town pubs will also drop in numbers.

We have a local club born out of the ex-mining community which was surving very well but is now struggling despite being one of the cheapest drinking places in the area.

It would appear that smokers will no longer stand out in the cold in many cases without their pints.

Despite early reports that Southern Ireland was not suffering from the no smoking law it has now become clear after several financial reports the facts are entirely different and pubs are indeed suffering large losses.

I will leave you to consider as to whether there could have been a better approach to this problem and a little more consideration given not only to smokers rights but also landlords and other businesses such as bingo halls.

A very valid couple of points there Ken.

My mother in law works in our local bingo hall and is faced with losing her job and i quote "due to the smoking ban of July 07 we will be laying staff off as it has had a detrimental impact on door takings" by my mother in laws manager!

Am i a little disillusioned in the idea that the good old fashioned WMC was set up (maybe not firstly) as an establishment to rally the men into socialising and getting away from the depression of work in very hard times to frequent the club and enjoy a pint and a smoke?

I 'captain' our local snooker team in the local WMC and after many years playing in the local leagues, this year we have seen a MASSIVE decline in teams entering them. Some entered with all good will but with the introduction of the ban the players simply never turned up and were unfortunately kicked out of the league. Many friends across the snooker league are now not to be seen because of the ban.

The same can be said of the bingo halls..........widows who found what pleasure they could in playing the game are now forced back behind their own doors , simply because of the ban.

In December 2007 a research poll conducted jointly by the British Institute of Innkeeping and the Federation of Licensed Victuallers' Associations found that overall revenue was 7.3% down as more men opted to drink at home (where they could smoke in comfort)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_men's_club

This is in December 07 , pretty dire already then! , since the ban was only implemented in July of the same year AND through the summer months!!

For all you die-hard (pro ban) out there , THIS COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF THE END for the good old fashioned pub / club scene.

Alcohol ban next?.............Dafter things have happened like banning smoking in public , haven't they???

I am looking forward to a country that has banned pubs bingo halls, bookies, Newcastle shirts, smoking (everywhere) cars from city centres, chavs, chewing gum, drivers that hog the middle lane of motorways, NHS managers, Jonathon Ross, Golfers, women drivers, and live baiting. Oh and more than anything else mobile phones.

Probably missed a few, but will do for now.

Taken with a pinch of salt AND tongue in cheek Neil.

So your hope for the future is a world with no socialising in pubs along with no gambling. And the usual drive into work (city) by the office worker who breaks down won't be able to phone for a recovery vehicle because of the mobile phone veto and his luck of seeing Tiger woods will be a waste of time too as he won't be playing the game anymore, so you'll just have to like it and lump it and get a bus home . But don't worry cos the middle lane will be free and the bus driver will be able to get his foot down not keeping his eye out for women drivers (who will have married all ex nhs managers) and get yourself home just in time for a news broadcast of how Jonathon Ross mysteriously disappeared while fishing off the coast of Kent livebaiting. Consequently the 2 were never seen again.

Newcastle Shirts I agree with you 110%

one of the saddest sights ive seen are coach trips....with the bus full of people ready to go....minus the little group of smokers, outside by the step, furiously getting as much smoke into themselves as they can, (because the bus is non smoking, and doesnt stop for an hour)before they are reluctantly herded on the bus by the frustrated driver.

maybe the smokers shouldnt be treated as just "social lepers" by society, but treated as the drug addicts they are,and given the help they need accordingly.

if any one is interested the smoking ban has started here now. i thought the french would of stuck 2 fingers up at it but all the bars and tabac's around here have no smoking signs on the door's, have ditched the ash trays and no one is smoking. will be interesting to see if any of the little bars around here start closing down.

Fishing, the only rule is that there is no rule!

On the radio this morning, china's first non-smoking restaurant is facing closing down due to lack of customers and numerous fights with clients as they tried to impose the ban. Will non-smoking catch on over there.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

I thought that anybody breaking rules of any kind in China very quickly found themselves in prison.

That set me thinking on a novel way to reduce the crime rate almost over night. Make all prisons strictly non-smoking and enforce it vigorously.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

one of the first things Nelson Mandela Did on his incaseration was Give up smoking and incourage his fellow inmates to do the same, So It would at least in some small way give them some indipendance from thier Jailers ability to control them via thier addiction.

Someone once said to me "Dont worry It could be worse." So I didn't, and It was!
