came across this picture, which made me look into it more . they are not allowed to kill Salmon & Sea Trout in competition, but seabass are fair game above the 45cm limit with no bag limit.

everyone is entitled to their fun and a couple for the pot if they really want, but is it just me or is this not on ?

good luck to them ,its not a cheap sport and is far more dangerouse than fluff chucking from a comfy bank, theres far more dedicated takers of fish out there than a bloke pretending to be a seal :D

just think that spinner your using may catch him and his haul,if i were him i`d be after the trout, salmon and seatrout ,its much more sport to do it in rivers though with limited vis and current etc.

i fail to see why someone interested in a species or method can dictate to others in the way they go around there lives ,fish are for everyone not just a group or person

its a competition ,is he going to swim round with a keep net behind him ,and the fish are hardly going to enjoy being speared and actually pray for death with fishy type noises ,the chap is actually doing them a favour they could end up with thousands of their freinds on a heaving deck waiting their turn to be killed

Guest gus angus

the problem with farmed fish is the amount of wild bait fish it takes to make the protien pellets to feed them, is it realy sustainable reference sand eels.

Hi GB.

I used to belong to the Brittish Spearfishing Association years ago.

I fished for myself, and in competition.

I gave up the sport because of the mindless slaughter of wrasse, which used to be included in the species hunted.

At some of the national championships, a 7 ton lorry would take away the catch of the day, for fertilizer.

I just got sick to the stomach with it.

However, belive me, its no easey task to hunt and shoot a Bass.

The guy in the picture must have been out there all day and worked ruddy hard for that catch.

Concidering that chap is free diveing, i.e. no air tanks, and is hunting the fish, on the fishes terms, and enviourment, he did well.

That pic I would think, is taken at a competition.

To take that amount for the pot is bang out of order.I know a few that take the Bass to sell, I was not one of them.

I doubt he does as much damage as the trawlers, or us fisherman combined.

I do see your point though.

Yakity. :)

I dont see much wrong with spearfishing, At the end of the day, At least they are not totaly wiping out stocks of fish(it takes alot of skill catching anything via spear so i believe) and what they catch will e eaten,

As ive seen on this forum before"lets get our own house in order 1st" Ive witnesed anglers kill many more fish than in this picture which were all smaller and many undersised on many occasions,

I soppose 1 drawback of the spear is sizes, It would be hard 2 estimate a fish underwater i mean you couldnt exactly go up to a bas and measue it before shooting so i guess what is killed is killed which isnt so good,

Not for me though think ill stick to rod and line:) on the shore/decks of boat where its safe :):)

Tight Lines
