Wingham Fish-In 2016 Catch Reports & Thanks

It's actually rather pleasant here tonight, compared to last night anyway. It's cold, but there is light cloud cover and the lake is as still as a mill pond. The nightingales are giving it large.

Well that was chaos.

Rod #1 went - it was another tench about the same size as the last one. I got it in, then chucked the rod out again to find my marker and clip up. At which point rod #2 went. Rod #2 was a good sized eel, maybe close to 3lb. It managed to horribly tangle the line from #1. With it in the net, I went off to get a disgorger. When I got back with the disgorger, it had found a hole in my landing net and was busying itself tying knots in the marginal reeds with my line. I grabbed my spare landing net and tried to net it. At this point, it succeeded in snapping the hook length, and was off, leaving me with a massive tangle and my landing net knitted into the middle of it. At which point rod #3 went off - a nice 2lb perch. In the process, I knocked my cup over, trod on and broke a bobbing and bent down to get a rod rest in the face. Just about got everything back in order 45 minutes after landing the tench. I hate eels!!

I hate the cold and especially the rain now I'm an old man ;)

Welcome to the club. I stayed on, even though I realised Christian, Norma and i were up the Eel City/Pike City end of the lake and chances of perch or tench slim. To be fair, I didn't get cold, thanks to a continued supply of hot food, hot coffee and high calorie sandwiches provided by Norma.

Got a larger eel the the second night, and a jack pike bite-off.

Wildlife was fantastic, Norma logged 51 species of birds, not including an osprey I glimpsed whilst Norma was back at the van preparing my bacon sarnies. Watched for the ***** which Terry had told me to look out for, but no dice. It struck me that I was more likely to see a Siberian tiger in my swim (the local zoo has a track record of escapes and attacks on keepers) than the beasts hoped for.

Heard a sad tale of someone having eel trouble - Put down his net to pick up a disgorger, and the eel got through the net and into the herbage beneath. Ho Ho HO.

I propose forming a Gentlemen Eel Society. Nothing to do with the social status of the members - No, it refers to the sex and demeanour of the eels themselves. Gentlemen eels are small enough not to need a net, so, making a necessity out of a virtue (instead of the usual tother way round), nets are banned by this society. REAL Gentlemen Eels are also lip-hooked (none of your coarse worm-guzzling gluttony allowed). Strike at the first movement of the float, lift the eel onto a patch of grass close to the water and a REAL Gentleman Eel will promptly shed the hook. A gentle nudge with a size 12 boot is then sufficient to return the eel so it can pester the bloke in the next swim. Simples.

Dunno what has gone wrong, "The server returned an error during upload" was all I got for my picture of a Gentleman Eel. Still, you all know what an eel looks like anyway

Here, as far as I know, are the final scores.

Cliff 63 - male tench of about 3lbs

Rusty - 3-00 perch

Steve Walker - tench of 6-06 & 6-00, perch of 2lbs, pike about 5lbs, PB eel of 3-00

Dales - 1-02 eel, a jack

Worzel - 2 to 2 1/2 lb eel

Sharkbyte - 4 eels of 2 to 2 1/2lbs

Russ - 4 eels from 2lbs to just over 3lbs, 3-03 and 3-00 tench

River Rover - 1-14 perch, eel of about 2lbs

Dave Benbow - tench of 5-08, eel of about 2 1/2 to 3lbs

Glyn - tench of 7-01

Vagabond - 2 small eels

Christain T - 3-05 PB eel + a jack

Ant63 - 6 tench, females of 7-04, 6-04 and 4-03, males of 6-07, 4-07 and 3-00

Dick Dastardly - 5 eels from 3-04 to 4-04 (from the Carp Lake)

It's a shame that Dan Taylor's 60-08 mirror from the Carp Lake was caught less than 2 hours before the Fish-In started!

The higher average size of eels from the Main Lake is very interesting this year. It's also strange that, despite the cold weather, the perch spawned a few days before the Fish-In.

It's disappointing that the bitterly cold weather wrecked what was otherwise a great event. After being spoilt for so many years we had a run of poor weather in late May. Guests then cast envious eyes on the big bags of tench coming out in April. We therefore brought the Fish-In forward to late April for the last 2 years and the bad weather followed us!

A further reason for bringing it forward was so that we didn't lose a weekend once the weed got up. Normally weed removal starts mid-May but this year there was barely a strand! In previous years when we were able to use chemicals we'd have to start early March or even late Feb!

Next year we'll almost certainly have the Fish-In on May 6th/7th/8th.

Will add my thanks to the bailiffs, who provided both haulage and taxi services, and who had already made my swim convenient and comfortable. Words are fine, but need to be backed up with folding money, so thanks also to who donated so much tackle and so many books to the cause, and not forgetting those who dug deep in their pockets to dispose of those items.

Thanks as always to Peggy and Steve for the concept, organisation, and back-up to these fish-ins. Catches apart, this event is one of the highlights. indeed THE highlight, of the AN fishing year. Nice to have met you all again.

Typical isn't it? One member has already had 13 tench so far this weekend, another 11. Additionally the first carp of the year came this morning from the Main Lake, a mirror of 42lbs. I also gather that another member had 3 carp in quick succession up to 44lbs from the Carp Lake this morning.

Firstly, many thanks to Steve, Peggy and the bailiffs. Despite the weather and the hard fishing, I really enjoyed the weekend.

I started off by feeding lightly, with just some smelly groundbait and a few samples, and didn't get any interest. On Sunday evening at about 6pm, I put all of the maggots I had left, most of a tub of chopped dendras and the leftover lobs and maggots Rusty had given me into three spots. So I guess about three pints of maggots and two tubs of chopped worms and a bit of hemp. This seemed to do the trick in the end, and I was quite satisfied that I had changed tactics and found something that worked.

It's good to be back online again and it was good to have been back at Wingham fishing even if I struggled big time.

First thanks to Steve B for the invite and top swim I was allocated it is one of my favourites. A very big thank you to Peggy for her usual top quality BBQ's and Steve (Wyeknot) for the welcome breakfast sandwich on arrival, just the thing to kick start the weekend.

Also many thanks to the bailiff team for the taxi service and work they put in to make Wingham what it is. Plus cheers to those who donated stuff for the auction as I picked up some nice bits of kit.

I don't have much to say or report on the fishing, i could blame the weather or time of year but to be honest I sort of run out of ideas when plan A and B did not work but it was good to be back and meet up with other AN members.

Stephen
