I remember one night a bolt struck the tarmac road just in front of my old flat in France. It knocked a lump the size of a soup plate out of the road surface.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Running up the garden path with 12ft of drennan carbon in my hand I had the same, also could see the ozone/air burning with little fireballs.

I retreated to the bath room to clean up.

Not a pleasant experience, could of damaged my favourite rod!

Many years ago, in the time of glass fibre rods, I was fishing the River Wiske, a very small river in North Yorkshire. It's a roving type of river, so I carried a large plastic sheet, instead of my usual umbrella. It started raining heavily, and then the thunder and lightning got louder and closer. I was bundled up in my make shift shelter, with just my face poking out, when lightning struck a tree on the other bank about 40- 50yds away. There was a crash, smoke, and the ground shook. Then a large branch toppled into the river, in what seemed like slow motion. It swung round in the current, and wedged into the near bank. Over the coming years it silted up, and became one of my favourite swims on the whole stretch. I had a kind of smug satisfaction, knowing that I was there and witnessed it's 'birth'.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I didnt see anything i was on my stomach weeding (why stand when you can sit ,why sit when you can liedown) so all i saw was the intense flash and lots of static and the smell .i presume the crack noise was because the rumble hadnt formed a pressure wave?!?.

I was in the low part of the garden so i presume the lightening diverted across the top of the trees onto the ariel above on the hill

How long was there between the flash and the bang

No bang just a crack at the same time as the flash yes i know light travels faster than sound but my ears dont count microseconds

Then you were bloody lucky then mate when the crack and the bang are similtaneous like that then the strike was really close. Just as well you were lying down. If you were stood up straight you might have got a wee bit toasted.

Probably would have got a nearby tree but diverted ,no other lightening ,went very dark then flash and cloud moved off and back to bright sunlight

Where we used to live there was a secret (in full sight and on maps) radio place ,the masts had scores of copper cables going off like a sunburst from the masts just under the ground ,it got hit many times as it was surrounded by open ground so stood out and attracted mr lightening
