Zander have been my nemesis for a decade. I fish the stretches of the Severn and Avon that contain them three or four times a year and I catch pike, I catch perch and I even catch chub (no mean feat with lures in deep slow water) but no zander - until yesterday.

A trip down to Pensham (lust below Pershore) say me leaving the jigs and soft plastics behind in favour of a selecton of cheap deep diving minnow plugs from China that were cheap enough that I didn't mind looseing two or three.

With a bit of colour on the river, the action was never going to be fast and furious but after catching three small pike, the lure got hit by something different and after a brief scrap, I slid the net under my first ever zander.

Not huge at about a pound and a half but very, very welcome.

We fished from 10 til 4, so not exactly optimal zander time but now that I know I have a method that works, it might be worth an evening session at some point.

The lures worked a treat and despite tripiing bottom regularly, I only lost one.

The fact that I had four fish and my dad had two with none of them being over a kilo suggests that the river is being hit hard by poachers. The Severn is just as bad and I've had a couple of seasons recently where I've not had a pike from the river at all, despite being a 90% lure angler.

Maybe I need to find a stretch that's subject to a bit less pressure.

I have only fished the Severn once in my life, when last year Lutra and I had a week there. We caught plenty of fish, a total 12 species each, including barbel, zander, pike and even tommy ruffe ! In fact I was surprised how easy the fishing was compared to many other rivers. Our week on the Thames this year yielded far fewer (and smaller) fish.
