I see that Ken Livingstone is saying something about Castro along the lines of "Say what you like about Mussolini, he made the trains run on time". I wonder what human rights abuses Ken would be willing to turn a blind eye to here if he liked the outcomes?

Steve,

We have always been pleased that Fidel didn't become a New York Yankee baseball pitcher. He would have been barely average and he made such a fine Dictator. I frankly don't think history will judge him to harshly. He needed the "big event" to gain an entire page.

Ah

He didn't literally say that, but he was making similar arguments for dictatorship to the old saw about fascists and trains.

Ah, I see :)

Why do we deify people like that when they have died? The list of atrocities that can be laid at his feet is huge! Mass executions, mass jailings, prison camps, torture chambers, execution of children and pregnant women.... But now there are people saying "He did what he had to do".

John,

Silly, perhaps rhetorical, question.

Deification masks horror. Two of the worst I can think of - Alexander the Great or Jesus. One a barbarian the other barbaric acts in his name.

"Castro wasn't so bad after all" is a feeble attempt to disguise our fundamental desire to survive and procreate.

Oh, I'm aware that it's not true, that is neither here nor there. I used it as shorthand for that kind of ends-justifies-means argument used by apologists for monsters.
