I don't know what the collective noun for gudgeon is (suggestions anyone?)- but there's a lot of them in this little vid from Poland...

It must have looked like that below the surface of some swims I have fished.  Sometimes i've had hundreds of them, one after and as soon as the bait has gone in the river just a rod length infront of me!

Then the next year they have completely vanished!  It may then be years before that scnario happens again.

Fred J Taylor, Dick Walker and others who fished at Redmire in the 50s referred to a "feast" of gudgeons.   Everyone caught some, Fred fried 'em, everyone ate 'em . Delicious but those days are gone - not many gudgeon there now.
