Last chance saloon

The end of the river season is nearly upon us.

Will you be trying to get out?

If so, where?

I'm full of cold at the moment, but hopefully, I'll get on the middle Severn.

It'll be a big chunk of meat on one rod, and a deadbait on the other. Nothing fancy, just a short session in search of a river lump.

Yup - got the whole week off - though won't be going every day  - hunting a big Kennet chub on Tuesday and plan try and get amongst some decent perch if it gets a bit milder....

No lumps in my permission ,tried a few times over the last season but nothing but trout ,no corms seen so its strange indeed ,theres a few deeper (deeper here is 3 feet max usually under tree boles on corners) holes where i usualy try but nothing! Unfortunately the field i used to fish where the Wey-s meet has been sold generally there was usually something there so until i track down the new owner lost to me.

The stretch up by waverley abbey has almost silted up theres not enough fish up there to make the walk worth while so i stick to the village .Not even spotted any crayfish !

Chris, congratulations on an amazing haul yesterday!

Re your comment above about wanting it milder for the perch, what water temp will you be looking for?  I tried the Thames today. WT was 6.5 deg C, and I didn't get a touch on maggot or worm, though I've caught at that temperature in the past.

I fished the Thames yesterday.  An otter surfaced directly under the tips of my leger rods - made me jump!  It resurfaced a few yards further out and turned back to look at me, I clapped my hands and did not reappear - pleased to say.  Really slow (dead) to start, nearly packed and moved venues but just moved swims instead.  Ended up with 8 roach (inc 2 gooduns), a snotty, a bleak and gudgeon.  The highlight was a 2lbs 15oz trout - very unusual from the Thames.  Best method was upstream legered maggots, today bread was not wanted?  Water temperature 44F.

The Flying Tench, I was casting about a third of the way across.  Upstream legering, started on bread flake but no bites.  Later swapped to live red maggots (usually use dead ones) and that's what they wanted - normally bread is best.
