Safety near the sea.

Can anyone recommend a lifejacket, that is not too cumbersome (when walking about and bending down), but will actually support a large bloke ?

A visit to my local Chandlers only gave me the option of a full flotation suit, or something that was more like fluoro water wings.

Are the fly fishing waiscoat/life jackets any good in the sea ?

I've got one of those harness types that inflate when you pull the thingummyjig. Some inflate automatically.

In confined places, they can be safer than more bulky models that get in the way and have you knocking other anglers over the side when you move around.

The important point to look for is that your jacket has have sufficient newton's of bouancy. (I forget the number that is sufficient, but I bet that someone on here knows!)

The recommended spec is 150N

Have a look at the Crew saver range.

They are widely used in the marine industry inculding Offshore and Fishing.

For both sea fishing and fly fishing I use a lifejacket that folds into straps that sit over your shoulders - they are not as intrusive as the ones that set permanently around your neck. The fly fishing ones are green until they inflate, so you don't look too conspicuous if that worries anyone. You can get automatic ones or manual toggle-driven ones, costing from £50 upwards. Crewsaver make them for yotties, England make them for fly fishermen, available from any major fly fishing stockists or mail order.

Just a sobering thought. I have just returned from a holiday in my native Cyprus. A British woman from Hertforshire was paddling in about 3ft of water on a sandy beach on the first morning of her holiday. An 18ft freak wave suddnely appeared on a slightly windy day and smashed her against the nearby rocks. Her devestated husband clung to some mooring ropes and saved himself. Tragically, she died instantly. I used this beach nearly on a daily basis, without a hint of danger. It just shows the unpredictable nature of the sea.

I cannot understand the mentality of parents who allow their youngsters to learn to sea fish by 'trial and error'.

Harbour walls, rock ledges, piers at night and the usual 'Mind those sharp hooks, laddie' ...

if it were a championship golf course, you'd book the youngster in for lessons .....

which is the safer environment?

A young lad's body was recently found about a year later after he fell in the River Hamble fishing from a pontoon....

you can find a safety-conscious, professional tutor/instructor via http://www.paauk.com or http://www.nfsa.org.uk

The salary of the chief executive of a large corporation is not a market award for achievement. It is frequently in the nature of a warm personal gesture by the individual to himself.
