Leslie Moncrieff

Les Moncrieff was not an instructor as such, but he did demonstrate the lay-back style around the country.

He was a big strong bloke, and at one session some whinger came out with "its alright for you, standing at over six feet....we shorter blokes don't stand a chance"

Les said nothing, but KNELT on the beach for his next cast, and STILL put it out over 100 yds :D:D

One of nature's gentlemen.

I still use my Longbow from time to time.

Vagabond, I witnessed Mr Moncrieff do just that at Dungeness.

I think it was one of his "party pieces".

He cast distances in those days, that seemed unachievable by "normal" anglers and he was also a very nice, approachable bloke.

Those were the days! Leslie used to say the best time for catching cod was on a CALM SUNNY DAY AT DUNGENESS. And he did. You had a job to find a space on the beach at weekends, or at night. My brother and I would walk over the shingle, hoping that there would be room for us. Many a time we had to walk way to the left of the point to fish. it was along way to carry 100lb of cod, had to do it in relays. Ahhh! Those were the days.

hows it going everyone?

i`ve been going through my old fishing tackle and came across my first ever beachcaster.given to me by my dads mate some 20 years ago.it`s a leslie moncrieff double taper.he`d had it a few years before he gave it to me.

if anyone out there knows anything about the rod or moncrieff i`ll be gratefull.

cheers.

 I had a Longbow for years, with a Seastreak. I bought them S/H from The Anglers Den in, I think, Gillingham, Kent. I was on a ship refitting in Chatham early 70's and we were invited to enter a team in the Deal Open. I only had a light rod that I used for mullet fishing in the docks and boat rods. So to get my 'brownie points'I bought the rod and reel to fish in the team. I blanked but it gave me a slight interest in beach fishing which has grown over the last 30 years or so. Re-rung the rod later and sold it and the reel on to another novice. Les Moncrieff was also the inventor, I believe, of the ringless boat rod called Cyclops, changable tips too. Now called the Interline etc. Nothing changes. :D

I attended a few demo's with Les and some other casters at several beaches up and down the country. As you said, not teaching as such but "showing them how".

At the end of the day we used to line up on the shore and just keep casting and retrieving, and it was on one of these days that I did in fact once say exactly what you heard Vagabond...namely that it was a lot easier for a HUGE guy, about 9inches taller and a foot wider than me...to cast 125 yards. Not whingeing...just simple fact.

I remember going to the BCA event at Scarborough, the first to be run under UKSF rules, and walking along some street in Scarboro the night before the event..walking beside this giant of a man and eating fish and chips.

If memory serves me well (not often nowadays) I got third place in the 6oz event, average of 151yds (3 casts) and was beaten by Peter Bagnall and "someone else" not Les by the way.

Bagnall was also a big man, not tall but about 5ft wide, with huge arms!!.

As in all "athletic"events, a "good big'un" will always beat a "good littlun"

Good old days? yes indeed, and still stacks of cod to be caught.
