I can get it up but like Phil I have to resort to the hand over hand method at times :D

Fishing with Spinning rod and lighter line for larger fish (ie; Pollack, Coalfish, Cod, Ling) is my favourite way of fishing for fun - is such a good sport, you really feel a proper fight from the fish.

Though not gone down as low as a 2 foot rod :) I use my old (late 80s) 8 ft Ugly Stick Spinning rod - medium action, is great rod for fishing from shore and boat (good for underhand casting from boat when your drawn mid-ships). The thing bends double with anything over 5lb.

Mackerel on a spinner with spinning rod is great fun - until the b****y seal comes along :)

I much prefer fishing light now - in boat competitions when fishing baits on the drift I use a Penn Tidecutter 12lb class, apart from the added sensitivity when combinded with braid - get a good fight no matter what the fish. (change days from when I first started out with an Ugly Stick 30lbs all roller rings when sometimes you didnt even know if you had a fish until you reached the surface) :)

Available from 18" to 30" and you can buy spare tips (but the 'tip' is the whole rod past the handle).

You could always use a drop net, especially if you are intending to return any fish you catch from a pier. It also reduces the risk of fish falling off as you try to wind them in.

I am sure you can get cheap drop nets on e-bay. Personally I wouldn't fish off a pier or harbour wall without one.

Those are rods made especially for ice fishing.

They stand nicely on the ice and allow a line to be dropped directly down into the hole. Also keeps the reel off the ice which is a good thing.

Check http://www.cabelas.com and search for ice rod.

2 sections, sort of. Handle and whatever tip you mount in it.
