Chesters - I didn't mean being "one" with them. What I mean is the opposite to what we are being taught. Instead of "assimilating" them, we need to turn round and say "look, you ARE different from me, with different customs and different religions. What we need to do is WORK TOGETHER!!"

 

Just think - How many Hospital Specialists are Asian? I don't think that the hospital would close down if those who celebrated Christmas stayed at home and celebrated it (or Easter or other holidays). Likewise, if a Muslim Specialist wants to celebrate Ramedan etc. surely we whites (or others) can keep going why he/she celebrates.

If you think - by accepting that they ARE different and agreeing to expoit the things that overlap and RESPECTING the things that don't, everybody is a winner!!!!

The NHS scenario you've described is exactly the way things do operate (at least in the hospital where I work). Most of the problems with inter-racial tensions, suspicions and misunderstandings don't happen in middle class professional circles, but out on the streets. I'm not denying that there are some highly-educated racists about, but they seem to be very few in number.

Actually most inter-racial tensions are no such thing, they are tensions among people who don't believe in the word 'inter' at all..those people who have inter racial marriages, friendships or liasions of other kinds generally don't have problems with the whole 'inter' thing. It goes back to the old bone idle lazy good for nothing igronance issue as always.

 

In my VERY HUMBLE opinion of course!

 

P.S. I'm white, my parents were born here and for as far as I can trace back all my relatives are white, but I couldn't give a stuff about ENGLAND or ENGLISH to be brutally honest with you KB, so where precisely in the ocean would you like to punt ME overboard?

I have become to realise that Ethnicity and Britishness are two seperate issues by placeing them under one Banner things begin to become Complicated, for example Using your rational all the Scottish regiments in the army are out of the window.

What you fail to understand is poeple are as protective of thier ethnic Identity as you are of yours.Yes they can be British

but proud to be Bengali,Many are and contribute magnificantly.

What makes you think that the rest of the EU is is going to sanction the Uk saying "sorry but your not welcome here anymore we're full up"

Klienie, you need to get this White=Christian, Others=Others idea.

 

As you are a christian, I presume you believe that all of us descend from Adam and Eve.

 

Similarly, anybody who is a evolutionist believes we descended from some ape-like animal in Borneo, current thesis probably change, ultimately i suppose from some enzyme on a hot rock.

 

The population of the UK currently stands at some 60 million. As I have said before, after the Great Plague, the population of EUROPE fell to 12 million (est). It doesn't take a great deal of understanding to see WE are all very closely related.

It sounds as though Kleinboet is suggesting the socio-political system know as 'apartite'. In its 'liberal' form the theory it sounds fair, accepting and respecting cultural and ethnic differences and promoting the notion that at least some areas of public life should include ethnically based segregation. When the theory is applied to a lived reality and becomes a social norm enforced through laws it has the potential to render societies dangerously divided. The well documented examples of South Africa and the US illustrate this. Civil unrest appears to be the inevitable outcome, as ethnically determined groups evolve into into dominant and subordinate positions as these groups compete for power and resources. What may begin as a system of mutual respect of difference breaks down as the system provides a strong foundation for unhealthy racism.

 

 

The thread title looks a little unfinished, 'who' precisley should our borders be closed to? perhaps those who advocate it would still allow tourism and short term business trips? but what about business and industrial specialists who come to live here to work on contracts? for example, locally we have Americans who work in the nuclear industry (Sellafield is close by). How about the professional sports people who entertain us with their skill? Our armed forces include foreign nationals who serve us well, for example we recruit a significant number of Fijians into the army, and famously the Gurkhas who have recently been the subject of a campaign aimed at giving them the right of residency.

 

Or is it that any entry restrictions would be based upon variables such as financial status and/or the nature and location of the applicants original country, or simply thier skin colour and percieved level of cultural difference?

 

There is a National Black Police officers Association (UK), not 'union'. (There is also a gay police officers association) which has evolved in order to address the specific needs and issues of members which had previously been a failing of predominantly white/straight bodies.
