Hurst Hole and the Shingle Bank is an excellent venue to target Cod, not may people do these days but the big bait anglers certainly do catch. As much if not more chance of some lovely Bass from the same marks using the same tactics, just a lot closer in...

The Deep Water part of Lepe, about 5 miles further up the Solent, is also another cracking mark.

Anywhere is likely to give the odd Cod, Hotspots are Hurst and Bournemouth beach's.

Hengistbury head has produced cod in past years...20lb some time ago.

Not so sure about the beaches...haven't heard of one pulled off there, more of a bass/flatty mark with the shallow sloping sandy beach.

Mind you I haven't been fishing them for a few weeks.

Isn't it strange that some magic fishing moments have nothing to do with fish. In my pre-boat days I was night fishing for cod right on the end of Hurst Point and true to form I bird-nested in the dark. I was head down for a few minutes sorting out the mess and looked up to see the massive QE2 ghosting past fairly close (or seemed to be) lit from end to end a blaze of lights. Quite breathtaking. Not sure if I caught cod that night but I was attempting to anyway. No more QE2 but still a chance of cod.
