June 12th 2011 - First Club Match of the season

Welcome to my blog, this is my first blog of any type so please excuse if it is not very good reading. This blog will follow my club match season and any other trips I manage to fit in between matches.   I used to match fish alot against some top anglers mostly at Gold Valley until several years ago, I haven't match fished for a few years and just fancied getting back into it but on a more local scale.   I joined the Verulam Angling Club last November and I am so glad I did, they have so

8th July 2012 - Club Match 3 - Grand Union Canal, Marsworth

Our (VAC) 2012 club match league is under way again, I fished the first match at Riverside Road but not much to report. I had 2 bream for 4lb 1oz and that put me 6th out of 36. I couldn't make the 2nd match as my car was undergoing repairs, so here we are at the 3rd match.     Only 15 of us on this one, some are not keen on the challenge (or potential long-ish walk) I guess.   I drew peg number 2 which turned out to be an "end peg" for some reason.   I had moored boats opposite,

August 10th to 12th - Yateley

Time for my annual trip to the Stoney and Friends charity event at Yateley. My wife goes to this with me as she likes camping and the countryside, unfortunately not interested in the fishing at all though!   I was on South Lake which I have fished a couple of times before. I managed to get us in a swim with a cast to the area at the end of the island and lots of room for the tent and cooking area!   After helping Jo get the tent pitched, I went about getting the rods out.   I fished

VAC Match 15 - Lakeside Farm - Feb 10th 2013

So it was time for the last match of the Verulam Angling Club championship season.   Going into this match I was in second place in the league. There are 15 matches in the season and your best 10 results count. The leader of the league (AllanB) had 840 points and I was on 795, my lowest counting score was 45 so I knew that if I could win or come second I would go into 1st place as long as Allan did not improve his lowest score of 65, which equates to 8th place.   There were just 14 on this m

June 26th 2011 - Club Match 2 - Smallford

The 2nd match of the season was on Smallford pit which is very deep in places.   I drew peg 13 which is in "Deep Bay" where it is around 16ft deep at 18ft out and goes down to around 30ft deep, this was not a good draw. Alot of bream could be seen in the low numbered pegs cruising just below the surface.   Not an awful lot to report, it was a struggle. I fished the pole up in the water for roach with caster/maggot and had a dozen or so chunky roach. I just couldnt keep the bites comin

July 10th 2011 - Club Match 3 - GUC, Marsworth

The 3rd match of the seaseon was on the Grand Union Canal at Marsworth, a day ticket stretch.   21 entries for this match and a late start/finish was being tried out to hopefully have a bit less traffic on and off the water to contend with so the draw was at 2pm and fishing 3 - 8pm.   There were a few surprises in this match. This stretch is known for its quality carp, chub and some bream as well as roach, a bad surprise for many of us was that bites were hard to come by and an amazing s

July 24 - Club Match 4 - Frogmore

Frogmore is another nice club venue and as at Riverside Road it is fairly prolific when pleasure fishing but much tougher in a match. This is not helped at this time of year by the low water levels.   8.30 Draw today, fishing 9.30 to 14.30. I drew a peg which has one of the 3 small islands in front of it, one peg from the end of the lake and the island was easily reachable with the pole. Unfortunately the fish were playing hard to get and even more so at this end of the lake as it turned ou

September 4th - Club Match 7 - Frogmore

I missed the last two club matches, the first due to being at the Stoney and Friends Charity Fish-in at Yateley blanking on The Pads lake and the second due to being on holiday in Cornwall with my wife. Whilst in Cornwall we did fish from Newlyn harbour wall on a couple of evenings, first evening Wife caught 3 - a Gar, a Mackerel and a small Pollock and for me - nothing! Second evening I managed a Mackerel.   For Club match 7 we were back at Frogmore and the entry was limited to 24 and "so

September 18th - Club Match 8 - Entire Farm

Entire Farm (Arrans Lake) is one of the commercial fisheries which has recently thrown up some huge match weights to over 500lbs. CARP SOUP!!   I have not fished at such a highly stocked fishery before and it wouldn't be everyones cup of tea but it is part of the club's match schedule so I gave it a go. Our match was split into a 2.5 Hr session followed by a weigh-in and then a 3 Hr session. Only 10 carp allowed per keepnet and any over 6lb had to be weighed, recorded and returned.   In

October 2nd - Club Match 9 - Alders Farm

As predicted in my previous entry, the madness continued on this highly stocked match lake. This one was a straight 5 hours match with a strict 100lb per keepnet limit, if you go over 100lb = disqualified. 30 entries for this one.   I drew peg 30 which was only 18" deep and fed 2 big pots of pellets and corn at 5m in front of me and the same to my right. I could hear carp being landed by others while I was still potting in!   I started on the 5m line and started getting some small ca

22nd July 2012 - Club Match 4 - Smallford

A hot day for this match, not good bream weather! I fished for the large bream anyway as I had drawn a decent area. I fished a groundbait feeder for the whole match, just swapping between hookbaits.   Not a great match for me, 2 small roach, 2 perch and 2 skimmers for a total of 4lb 1oz.   I did have a violent bite an hour from the end after a long time biteless and even though it broke my hooklength, I know it was one of the 5lb+ bream I had been after because as I lifted the rod to

VAC Match 14 - Lakeside Farm - Jan 6th 2013

The second-last club match of the season, usually when the club visits this venue it is very cold and is a hard silverfish match with no carp caught or just the 1 or 2 carp caught on the whole lake, although there are plenty of carp in there.   It was unseasonably mild for the week before so the silvers at least should be feeding ok and perhaps a few carp would show. On the day there was a cold mist which hung around for over half the match.   I drew the near bank and deep water, both my rig

VAC Champion of Champions Match - How End-26th May 2013

This match was scheduled to take place at the club's Bellows Mill lake but due to it being very clear and weedy the match was switched to How End Fishery.   We were to be on Yasi's Lake which I have fished once before in March last year. I started by feeding chop worm and caster at the bottom of the far shelf which was around 11m and the same at the bottom of the near shelf at around 4m. First go with a bait I shipped tight over to the far bank to see if there was any quick carp to be had, no

VAC 2013 League Match 1-Riverside Road-June 9th

Time for the first club match of the league season. The club owned Riverside Road was the venue and true to form it fished very hard in the match. Not much to report from me, I only managed 2 fish. One crucian and one bream for a total of 4lb 1oz.   Full match report can be seen HERE

VAC League Match 2-Grand Union Canal at Tring Stn-June 23rd

Our first time on this bit of the canal. I fed down the track with chopped worm and caster, on the far shelf with loosefed casters and in the track to my right with a few pellets.   I had a lot of problems with tree litter covering the whole swim some of the time, sometimes I could not get a bait in. I forgot to take any photos! I managed a few roach and perch plus a small skimmer on bits of worm and one skimmer from the far shelf for a total of 2lb 6oz which put me about half way down the f

Friday Evening at the River-July 5th

My wife and I visited the VAC club stretch of the River Lea at Marford to see if I could catch my first river barbel. We arrived at this very popular venue at around 4.30pm to find most swims taken, we managed to drop into peg 11. I set up a cage feeder and a float rod with centrepin, mixed up some marine halibut groundbait to plug the feeder with and got fishing just after 5pm.   After getting organised and making a start with the feeder, we tucked into some grub we took with us and a nice c

VAC League Match 3-Newlands Hall, Moat Lake-July 7th

A hot, sunny, still morning greeted us when arriving at the venue. I was grateful to draw the far side (from car park) of the lake as that side was fairly shaded by the trees behind the pegs and the trees and bushes between the pegs.   My plan was to catch 100lb+ of carp from the 5m line on paste and the margins on corn or bunches of dead maggots over groundbait/dead reds/corn feed.   What actually happened was that I struggled on the paste so switched to 6mm expanders and caught lots of cr
