i went on a manual handling course at the uni once ,after the spiel the chap donned a waistcoat with loads of pockets  (he never explained why) and demonstrated lifting variouse items ,when my turn came i lifted the fire extinguisher by the handle on the top ,no he says you bend your knees  this annoyed me i then MADE SURE my knees remained straight in all further tasks ,he couldnt explain why i shouldnt use the handle carefully placed on the top to lift it by  ,he then put a five gallon container on the floor ,bent his knees and lifted it , he didnt answer why i couldnt lift it by the handle on the top from the bench where it origanaly was
a question time came at the end ,my question was what would i do incase of fire if i was on a ship???? my answer of opening the sea cocks ,as the ship sunk the fire would be extinguished ,didnt seem to satisfy him ,never the less we all passed ,my certificate went in the bin as i went out ,several hundred pounds wasted on a chap with lots of pockets
as my job mostly consisted of moving p.c`s and workstations to the front of a desk so i could see the inventory number on the back bending my knees whilst doing so would result in a bloody chin ,sounds dangerouse to me
