  1. Welcome to AN. First, don't type all in caps, it's regarded as shouting on here and many other forums. You may find you get ignored if your posts are in capitals unnecessarily. Secondly, it's not a Carp forum I'm afraid although there are many many experienced Carp anglers on here who I'm sure will shortly help you out. Thirdly, good luck to you and your mates. I don't often fish for carp myself so I'm not in a position to offer anything useful. (Sorry if that came over strong, andrewk96, but hopefully these few tips will stand you in good stead to get the best from the forum)
  2. Duh! Of course. Dumb moment.
  3. I use a cord to my home-made bobbins. If it's windy, I can always slide a weight onto the cord to stabilise it or a large key ring over a bank stick next to it if bites sre tiny and finicky.
  4. Also known as a Prymnesium bloom by any chance? Or something else?
  5. I turn it on them. They start off "blah blah blah, great deal, waffle, etc" I say "Thats a coincidence, I was just about to call you. I currently have a great deal on used Giraffes..." The trick is not to let up or get annoyed, keep it as you trying to sell them something. Another good one is to tell them the conversation is being recorded, they usually hang up immediately.
  6. Well, being a glutton for punishment, I'd like the chance to have another crack at Wingham this year. Last year didn't go well for me but I'll be better prepared this time. Do you think Steve'd let me have a play in my 'yak? I could run the ultimate bait boat service... hmmm... might be onto something! Probably get attacked by a Pike or something I rushed myself last year, gave myself too many options. I think Rusty has it spot on. Fish in your comfort zone and stick with it. I don't think a place like Wingham treats chopping and changing tactics kindly. On a personal note Mark, broads tactics have no place here I think. I don't think I really appreciated how easy it is to fish the broads until I went to Wingham and the Fen meet. It's a whopping great place (bigger than Salhouse Broad). Location is everything. I intend to use my first few hours mapping out my swim this time instead of a quick check and guesstimating each cast. I'd recommend the same to everyone who's never been before.
  7. Twice in about 15 years of getting them inc Childs License. Consecutive years, on the same stretch of river and same month...
  8. 'Fraid not and can't PM him yet as he's a new member. Will get on to Elton for some assistance.
  9. Linked this to Anglers Afloat forum.

    Otter

I'm sure someone else has already posted similar but I'm buggered if I'm reading the whole lot to make sure. If I may, I want to make an analogy... No? Tough. I'm doing it anyway. Cast your minds back to the late 60's, early 70's. way before my time btw, but i hear that there was a massive uproar over a certain fish called a Zander... Yadda yadda, destruction, waffle snort, end of days and so on. It all balanced out in the end. Now, extrapolate breeding habits of Otters vs Zander and you will see that Zander are somewhat more prolific and so the boom/stabilise cycle was relatively short, maybe 10 years in 'most' waters. The Otters will stabilise in numbers... eventually. It may take nearly 30 years but it'll all balance out in the end. Yes, there may be short term issues in some areas, but stocks will recover. I'm a 'half full' kind of guy I guess... And I'll be there, 30 years later, fishing happily (and catching), watching Otter Kittens play, while most of you haters will be feeding my bait... It's the kind of thought that keeps me happy... Btw, my theory is based on nothing but what I've heard, guessed at, and a positive outlook
  11. My heaviest rod, bar the 'Caster is a pair of 1 1/4 TC Nash Hooliguns, or my 'Animal' rods as I call 'em, so I honestly don't know what a 3lb TC Rod is capable of. But, I do know that my very old school Glass 'Caster will belt out 6-7oz, 150yds on a belter backcast. Even after reading all the other recommendations and the 'cheap' spodders on offer, I'd still go for a cheap and cheerful 13-14' Fixed Spool Beachcaster, just to p!ss the bivvy boys off! Reckon I could get near to 200yds with modern materials!
  12. Something tells me he wasn't baiting up unless thats bivvy boy slang for... OH NO! Overactive imagination overload!!! Glug anyone???!!!
  13. Afaik, anything that'll lob a loaded 'Spod' out to where you want it to go... Judging by the few I've seen, save your pennies and opt for a cheap and cheerful Fixed Spool Beachcaster over a 'Spod' labelled rod. Have I just crushed your tackle tart dreams???
  14. Spain... Catfish + Sun= Even have Mrs Renrag interested in it... And THAT'S an achievement, I can tell you!
  15. Used the cheap 'Power Maxx' braid. I think most of the cheaper stuff is 3-ply. Good stuff imo. A bit more noisy and quite a flattened profile compared to Power Pro (which is excellent too). Use 80lb Power Maxx on my Beachcaster. Will also spool some up for FS Kayak fishing too later this year. Currently have 30lb Red PP on my FS lure set-up. May try the Power Maxx on that Baitcaster I got off Budgie but am hesitant due to its profile... Would this make any difference to it bedding in? Not experienced with Baitcasters. Any help on this front would be appreciated or I'll stick to PP instead.
  16. Going to hang on to this thread as I've just gotten a Kayak and a depthsounder/fishfinder is on the list of eventual equipment to get. My main concern for the 'yak is waterproofness/reliability followed by detail. Any suggestions will be noted Sorry to hijack your thread Vagabond.
  17. Looking for a SG RR in the 6'6" trigger grip/baitcaster variant. CW <70g. Just wondered if anyone has one gathering dust that I could buy off them before I buy new. Thanks.
  18. Don't mind a bottle of Bud on a summers evening but prefer those cheap 'Biere de Luxe' stubbies you get at ASDA tbh. Both are far better than 'Roo P!ss. Like a pint of Guinness on occasion but the quality doesn't seem as good as it used to, prefer Murphy's atm. For a proper pint though, Wherry is a good everyday type beer. You'll have to try it if you get yourself over here. That'll put some hair on your tonsils mate
  19. In your scenario, definitely one. I'll gladly help anyone who is struggling but tbh, I can never picture myself having to decide
  20. Wherry is nice pint. Will have to have a look at that, didn't know Woodfordes did homebrew kits!? Tbh, I never looked but I'll have to have a look into this home-brewing mullarkey now...
  21. A Zander, any size, by any means necessary . A 15lb Pike, a 6lb Bass and a 2lb Perch, all on lures.
  22. No, at least not in numbers. We get the occasional 'scare' without photographic proof and have heard reports of 'puncture wounds' on lives and deads. Usually in the Brundall area if you fancy your luck. Catching lives there compared to the fens, is a piece of p!ss! I'm sure someone, somewhere has tried to put some in but for whatever reason they haven't flourished. Probably a numbers game tbh.
  23. I'm missing Zander full stop. I won't kid myself and believe I could end my season with one but if I'm there, it'd be a possibilty. 3 and 4" Kopyto's at the ready...
  24. Yep, thats a Whitey. Consistent with all the tell-tales. Nice fish. There's a few shoals on the Broads still. Not sure if I'd claim 100% to have had a few, but I believe I have, on the Thurne system only though.
