  1. Apart from pricey still waters the opportunities to fly fish a river in East Anglia for Trout are rare. I enjoy still water but a moving stream creates more excitement for me. I am able to cope with dry fly techniques but I still find wet fly somewhat mysterious. Bite indication? Choice of fly? I did the usual and asked advice at the locals, but this really only applied to trout. Any advice?
  2. Its the heap on the lake/river bed Vs the broadcast to an area method. So the heap gets a single fish locked on position. The broadcast creates an appetite where the fish snap about for bits. Does it depend on the level of stock in the water? Or is it the type of bait that is suited to the method?
  3. Happy Birfday Well done
  4. I would nt stick too hard and fast to any guidelines but look for common sense. You can always put ground bait in but it is hell of a job to get it out. So cast out without any and see if the little dears are interested. Then try some to see if things improve. The wind is a bit different. Is the wind bringing food? (cos this means grubs up and feeding). Is it bringing warmth? (cos this means activity and activity means feeding. Try shaking an overhanging tree and watch where the bits fall, does this then produce a fish? Its not worth doing on any really deep water.. surprise surprise.
  5. It appears that not even John Wilson can recollect seeing this then??
  6. What a beauty..! I am glad it comes with instructions. Do you think we could paint the fish with red and white rings? In fact if we cut the cackle and go straight for the model that fires the spear then we can dispense with the float etc. They just get in a mess in the asda bag anyway. Then we wont be hurting the fishies poor ol bee stung lips. Nice wun gud luk this weekend everywun
  7. on still water the roach etc seem to still go potty for old squishy hemp that is weeeelll past its sell by date. It does take a strong nerve, a steady hand and no sense of smell to handle it though. It seems to be that same with sweet corn. Gud luk
  8. Grange Farm is only open during the fishing season (June-March) Only good old maggot, bread, worm, luncheon meat etc is allowed. No boilies etc Lake/pond is stocked with a range of fish but small carp are a speciality. Largest is probably about 18lb. Only allows 12 fishing on the lake/pond. Head out of Woolpit on the Stow' Rd. just past the school and the recently made footpath you will see a road to the left (prob'ly signed to Rattlesden). Up this road to the junction on a bend and turn right. About 30 metres on, look to the right for the farm and farm shop. Bingo Look at the pond, with its island, and topping carp, and overhanging trees. Its great when you are the only one there. You will need to book the day before you go so get to the farm shop for details. You use the toilet facilities of the camp site. I think it is about £7 for the day. Carp and tench abound to about the 2lb. There are larger fish but they tend to be elusive.
  9. Lakeside and Riverside are both in Onehouse (just look for Stowmarket). Lakeside is the most scenic and a real glory to fish. But avoid weekends. Blue Water (!) at Woolpit. Bakers lake (Buxhall) and the gigantic Rushbrooke Lake(Kettlebaston) are square tanks teaming with fish. Needham Lake is the pit at Needham Market. These are all about the £5 for the day mark. More expensive is Grange farm at Woolpit.. charming lake. Foxearth Lake but really near Glemsford. The ponds at Brantham (signed as "Carp Fishing") The big complexes in the Beccles Bungay area. There that should get you started
  10. I'll let you all into a little secret if you promise not to tell... I am also cruel to my plants !!!! It is curious that I was cruel three times to either a single rudd or three identical, damaged rudd on Saturday. Surely there is only so much pain a fish could take. Maybe fish are masochistic... my God that opens up new avenues. Maybe we should charge them! On Radio 4 (between 6 and 7) the female researcher thought that it would be OK to kill the fish after inflicting pain on it. GASP Now that really would make me give it all up. I can see that fish feel. They react to the feeling, otherwise I have just wasted a perfectly good worm. But my presence at a bankside swim is less that the presence of a pike. Who is perceived as the worst threat? I just hope someone said sorry to the poor bloody trout with a bee sting in his lip.
  11. yep we tried em but ya really need the spag hoops to go wiv' em
  12. At first rain seems to make the surface feeders excited. If the rain is colder than the pool ....well it all goes dead. As the rain continues the action fades. If it gets lighter well here we go again. Check the temp of the wter incr temp is ok decr temp is usually a packupngo. But the trouble is you only really know for sure once you have finished. Hindsight is a fantastic thing
  13. Ta bloody good idea! Now where's the cheapest milkshake powder........
  14. Nice one! stick n waggler huh? lucky bugger!
  15. Local Tacdkleshops vary tho One of mine sets out to be a bastion for angling, provides a seat for the person at the head of the queue and buying just maggots is an experience. Anything is obtainable but little is available. Another is just a base for the owners fishing "activities". Another is taking on the mail order trade and winning... open on sunday is a real winner.
  16. We do seem to get all het up about which way the maggot is attached. Ivan marks pointed out that the loose feed seems to float down horizontally and then suddenly whoosh there plummets a vertical maggot form above. Since then I have always included the horizontal.
  17. Must be one of the advantages of not being in a digital or cable area.
  18. I would go for the "Crooshun" but a special place could be reserved for those hybrids, specially if its on the fly.
  19. The old rings and whippings can be carefully cut with a craft knife and then wire wool to smooth down. Re ringing with coloured whipping and then some fibre glass resin to set the whipping. U can add a colouring but I do not. Then varnish over the top for the overall finish.
  20. May sound silly but... check out the bank for a firm foothold, whip rod fishing is all about balance. The narrow width means that the fish will be in close so get low , use the unhooking mat as a seat. Fish fine with the floats well down then the action comes fast and furious. Sadly a keep net might be essential on some waters because of the numbers of bewildered caught fish returning to the water.
  21. If you are truely untraceable then use the OS map.. but they are fairly tight about copyright. Use their map and then in a graphics package make an overlay copy, remove the unwanted features and then "correct the map"
  22. Last night's drop to minus 4 gave the fishies a bit of a shock on the Gipping. But in the sunlit areas the roach , hybrids and chub were all to be found. Oh yeah Pike Wallahs were catching as well.
  23. Sadly the "kids" get blame for litter etc but all they really need is an adult to say "you forgot this" but so often they are ignored. In some cases the old uns dont even answer sensible questions!(gasp) On my local lake the owner wishes that some of the overnight carpies were as compliant as the little uns. I have no real dislike of the overnight booze up but please take the cans with you. But I suppose if you are puffing off with a back full of bivvy, tackle, bait and campbed then is no room for the extra!
  24. I can go with the idea that some colours are seen better in water. presumably there is also the factor of what the fish associate with a colour. Red maggots are usually stripped first from the hook by perch. Because the perch react differently to the pike then there must be a difference between species. Either this is due to physical difference or in there diet needs. Surely depth of water will influence the light energy. deeper water will be darker. Any effect of colour perceived by fish will be reduced. Another factor must be the clarity of the water.
  25. Sounds like the Bloodi Biggus Mouse or commonly known as "ratty". I had the mice gnaw through all my ground baits etc, they were even in tubs! The mice ate the inners and left the husks on my raw hemp! Still I got my own back, they did like the blue wonder woofle dust I put down for 'em.
