  1. Is power bait carp bait similar to our old fashioned british luncheon meat?......often called spam!
  2. I haven`t really changed since I was a seven year old!
  3. John, take no notice of the last two comments.God,I thought fishing was all about a challenge. What would be the point if it was easy? You have decided to have a go and good luck to you. I would approach the water using simple, old fashioned methods.Firstly,I`d have a go at clearing some of the weed from the margins.Try raking the swim as far as possible up to the ledge. If you prepare a few swims like this and then pre-bait the fish will soon come looking for more.Tench and Bream will love the disturbance and make a move. I`d also start by using a waggler slightly over depth,a slider or if you fish really close in try the lift method.
  4. Coleman stove,buckets of water and strong(Yorkshire)tea.
  5. Gaffer, quote: I know some top anglers swear by these hooks, so I must have some from a duff batch. have you considered that some "top" anglers get paid to say how good certain products really are.Half the time they don`t even use them. It`s been going on for years and loads of people fall for the ads in all the carp/fishing rags. I`ve fallen for these lines myself on many occasions but have learned to make considered judgements of all tackle.I never buy any of the more expensive tackle until i`ve tried them and I never use anything in the hook/line/ end tackle range if it`s let me down. It`s a case of "once bitten twice shy" Yes,there could be a bad batch but do you really want to be playing the fish of a lifetime with that thought in the back of your head. My advice....try some other product.
  6. signed up and now lets hope they listen and more importantly do something!
  7. posted by poledark quote: Whichever way you look at it ,"The March" was a huge, yes HUGE, success. The ability of the CA to motivate 400,000 ordinary people to march peacefully in support of their beliefs was very impressive, Yes 400,000 people is a massive turnout and whatever you believe in you have to give credit to both the organisers and those who marched. Whether you think it`s okay to shoot or hunt foxes or are of the view that anglers were being used is totally irrelevant. The fact is that this march did almost no good for anyone! Oh yes the media made a splash in the earlies and ,I have to say, some of their comments were extremely well thought out and some even impartial(thats a change) However, the following day it was all but forgotten. Why? Because at this moment in history we are about to go to war with Iraq..... Some things are more important than angling and hunting and rural issues.Oh,not to us but to the vast majority of the country. So I have to disagree that the march was a huge success. In fact it was really a washout. Sorry for all those who got blisters!
  8. Lymm Dam is excellent and not far away. There is also King Georges pool which is a small Carp/mixed fishery of about 1 1/2 acres set in the grounds of Altrincham golf course.Access to the pool is down a lane adjacent to the secondary school on Moss Lane.
  9. Bobby I`m really sorry you`re getting bored with these types of discussions but lets be fair it is a forum for all of us to give our point of view. You may want Elton to ban such threads and leave it for more mundane articles, that`s your perogative.I,like many others,do feel I need to get involved in these issues.Yes,I am one of those who feels angling could be banned in the future, and probably sooner than you think.I`m also certain antis use these forums to find out how the enemy(as I`m sure that`s how they see us) is feeling. Should a ban on this type of discussion happen then I`m afraid I would find the group pretty boring myself. There are plenty of threads from people asking for help and various information.I do enjoy these and like to participate. But let`s be fair, you can get these types of thread anywhere. The internet is full of forums and I`ve visited and been involved in a few. However,I do like this one as it is.I`ve heard a lot of good sense from anglers who obviously think hard and seriously about there sport. The same people write and give their opinions, not always to my taste, about these issues and also can be seen giving advice and having a laugh in other threads. Would you really want to ban these issues and possibly lose those same contributors? I know you didn`t want any replies like "it`s gonna happen" but I object to you suggesting that anyone saying such must be an anti. If you don`t like it then don`t get involved, bury your head in the sand. I`d be more than happy to suggest a poll on this matter.I`m also very confident that the majority would say keep things as they are.
  10. Andrew I had to outline a few of your comments but please dont take offence. I don't think the anti's would be seen to have achieved anything if our chosen sport is constantly being taken up as thier hobby by more and more people, eh ? REALLY? The growth of our sport has been tremendous in the last 10 years or so. ARE YOU SURE,I UNDERSTAND IT IS IN DECLINE. Takes the youngsters off the street and educate them that if they want the best in angling, or in life, they have to complete their education, get a good job to get it. REALLY.DO TODAYS KIDS THINK LIKE THAT? There's too many of us anglers in all corners of the UK, in all walks of life; that no government would even dream of banning us from picking up a rod. REALLY? even if we are not fishing, we are still dreaming of it. DREAM ON!
  11. It once happened to me in France and I like you shone the torch on only to see a whacking Rat pulling a pound bag of boilies out through the bivvie door! After that I kept my bait firmly covered and inside a thick plastic bicket.....outside my bivvie.

    Glug/Dip

I have to agree that glugging a bait can be less than useful but occasionally it can work.I have certainly done well over in France on the bigger venues where I`ve added oils to my fishmeal baits and soaked hookbaits in oil/multimino and Cranberry.

    stour/avon

Hi all, i`ve got some time off work and intend going down south for a long weekend, probably fish the Avon and Stour. I haven`t been down for a few years so I`d be grateful for any news.
  14. That is one horrible looking rig and I agree that it could cause some heavy duty problems to a fishes gut. If I`m correct in reading the explanation of the workings/reason for using this rig it appears it`s for convenience,ie.allowing a bait to be positioned near to or further from the hook. The other reason seems to be to allow lots of small baits(sweetcorn)to be fished as a boilie. If this is the only reason then all I can say is there are some incredibly lazy/stupid anglers out there. It doesn`t take long to tie a rig, particularly a no knot.So in that respect there is little reason to call it convenient. There are other means to tie sweetcorn/particles in bunches,ie.threaded onto very fine mono,so again no reason for this rig. Please god this doesn`t become fashionable.I can only imagine what the anti brigade would make of it.
  15. I`m sure Muskie are a great fighting fish and a wonderful predator but for heavens sake not in our waters. I couldn`t stand the thought of a new line of fishing tackle and the constant advertisements driving me to distraction!
  16. you could try something really old fashioned and make them.Just go to a local B&Q store and buy a length of 5 0r 6 mm steel rod,cut to size and use a vice to put a bend at the end and a file to create a point at the other.Cheap and satisfying.
  17. So why not scrap the pound and the euro and go for the dollar. How about the state of England? No I know we`re in a mess I meant `State` as in USA.Senator Blair sounds ok.
  18. You`ve pretty much nailed it on the head there David, although I personally don`t think additives and high proteins have that much effect on Carp. I`m sure the only way we`ll get a 70lb fish in this country is if they are brought in from foreign venues illegaly or from new strains. Then again I don`t believe records matter that much.I`m sure Lee Jackson would say that he enjoyed the experience of catching the fish he`d sought out rather than the record.....I think. Congratulations Lee.

    Don`t you spell waggon with 1 `g`

    chub bait

Bread flake with a dab of Primula cheese/chive spread has been good for me in the past.I also like to make a paste of bread and really smelly cheese.
  21. I do have a fairly big assortment of rods and reels for fishing for Roach through to Catfish and Mahseer.I do,however, use some of these for other species,ie.Carp rods I use for Pike, uptiders for sea and Mahseer. Similarly I use reels to suit both the rods and the type of fishing. Yes I`m sure I could manage with less gear(as my wife keeps telling me)but fishing successfully has a lot to do with confidence and having a feel for things.I`m sure I wouldn`t feel quite so confident using Carp rods to catch monster Catfish or if you want extremes uptiders for Roach.Yes I`m sure they could catch fish but it wouldn`t feel the same.

    weed problems

There are numerous chemical herbicides on the market although some can cause more problems than they solve,ie.they kill every water plant. You could also try introducing triploid grass carp which are very effective. However,I would also suggest you get professional advice before starting. I believed that canadian weed stops spreading after a time. From what I can gather it takes about 5 years or so and the experts(please tell me if i`m wrong Bruno)don`t really know why.

    Right You Lot

An internet based angling society has my vote. There are several reasons why such a group could work and I will list my reasons below. 1)there is a great advantage of discussing issues with "the group" and as long as there are voting capabilities and it is a democratic society all members should be happy. 2)All anglers can join in no matter what area of the sport they are interested in,and I would include Sea and game fishers here too. 3)If it is to be run by anglers from this forum then all associated webmasters can and should promote the society( I certainly would)and as such there could be a huge membership. 4)As long as it is made clear to existing angling groups that this society holds no threat to them,I see no reason why they could not become affiliated.(now that`s maybe going a bit far but who knows how things could pan out) 5)There are obviously a lot of intelligent, forward thinking folk in this group. If they all were to join and input ideas on how to fight against anglings detractors then the group would be,in my opinion ,very strong. All that said and done I firmly believe that there have to be rules and these should be discussed as a matter of urgency.Initially there should be a minimum of written rules although as the group grows I`m sure more would follow. Basically the number one rule should be "all for one and one for all" The only other thing I have to say at this time is a name.I am wary of using anti-(anything),or "freedom" for the reason that it makes any group sound like the outrageous morons we fight against. Ok Dragonboat I`m with you.
  24. Twigster is echoing my remarks earlier in the thread and is quite right that we should stop arguing amongst ourselves and get to protecting our sport. Yes,I understand it is a difficult task we face and money is needed.Well,if it`s correct that the industry makes (whatever)many millions each year maybe it`s time that industry put a little back. There are some massive angling companies out there, who, from our hard earned cash make fortunes. If anyone needs to protect angling and anglers it`s the likes of these who should be foremost in the fight. I`m not sure how many anglers use this group but if we all targeted(probably not the right word) the top ten angling companies and asked for their support they would laugh it off.If we went on and got our angling buddies to do the same then maybe they would sit up and think. The fact is that they are fully aware of the trouble angling is in but like us sit back and let it happen. The only difference is that they`re still making money. Can you just imagine how much some of the big companies use in advertising their products. What if they used a portion of that to advertise the joys of angling, show all the positive aspects of our sport, the unseen work in conserving our countryside,etc.etc. PETA and others use these tactics and I believe we should do the same.Fight fire with fire. What of the question of "who`s going to fight our corner?" Like I said in my first post I`m new here but I suspect there are a lot of very well educated people using the group.Maybe we could start it ourselves!Maybe if we start the ball rolling pass it on to a group who are already in place but who haven`t come up with a decent plan of action. I don`t know, just a thought.
  25. As a newbie to this group I would like to add a note or two on this subject. It`s been my opinion for quite some time that angling is the final frontier for those sinister folk at PETA et al. These types have been putting the knife into angling and anglers for many years along with our countryside friends who enjoy hunting. It doesn`t matter who`s in power, labour, conservatives or a bunch of aliens. These people are powerful and very convincing. The morality of hunting has been eaten away for years and all the folk out there said it would never be banned....look at them now. The same thing is happening to angling. Firstly we discuss the problems amongst ourselves and get into arguements over whose fault it is. Then we discuss ways to combat the threat but unfortunately either nothing is done or is taken up half heartedly. Some of us just sit back thinking that others will fight our corner or even worse convince themselves that nothing will ever happen to angling. "Too many jobs involved.....too much money...too many businesses" Does this sound familiar? What`s happening here is the thin edge of the wedge and a nationwide ban is almost certain to follow. Then what? Well, I believe that in 10 years angling will be completely banned from our shores and it won`t make any difference who`s in power. So I would suggest that to start combating this threat we should start by agreeing to assist each other regardless of what species we fish for or which political party we vote for.
