  1. As a kis I always took my maggy boxes when buying maggots, after a break from angling I was surprised that the shops started selling them in plastic bags. However its no big problem for those that prefer them in bags, take your box to buy them, then transfer them into the bag remove the air, and you have them as you prefer. No problem SteveH
  2. And it was the tories with their competetive tendering system that got rid of thousands of domestics etc and handed the contracts for cleaning to their fine upstanding, we can do better for less( for the workers and much much more dosh for us)friends....now look at how it is. Labour for me even though I have reservations. SteveH

  8. Scientists once checked to see if plants have feelings and attached potentiometers and other such paraphenalia to the leaves of plants, when the cut the plant standing next to the test subject the meters went haywire, the tenuous conclusion being that plants are aware of their surroundings and showed 'horror' and 'fear' at the fate of their colleagues...........daft sounding I know but I kid you not. 10. Wordbender, in that respect you remind me of me, I have been known to have a group of 30 plus kids in a conga line along the beach and sea front, 2 of whom were related to me! My kids are no longer embarrassed by me which is an achievement as the youngest is no 20 and just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. My grandkids still come in the house to see if I want to "come out and play". When I take 'em fishing we spend hours making up silly stories about the wildlife we see, (in which I try to include some factual stuff), and if I take my grandkids anywhere I can guarantee there friends move heaven and earth to come along too. Long live the kid in all of us, there is a time to put away the things of childhood, I have yet to get to that time is all. SteveH

Good advise about the raking in particular, where it is allowed I have been known to rake a swim then start fishing it within the next half an hour, never had a really bad day doiung that and sometimes had some superb days. Sally Walshes Dam used to be a venue I would do this, (many years ago before it was made into a Syndicate Carp Water, which it bcame before Barnsleyblacks got the rights. Excellent carp in there but the Tench are worth going for with specimens up to 8lb and averageing 3 - 5 lb. I dont know if the 'Blacks' would allow raking now, but I will be finding out come May. 17. No problem Newt, I dont actually see it as either / or, but have to join another organisation for the time being as I cant join FACT as an individual. Lee, thanks for the info, I aim to check out a number of organisations the SAA being one of them. SteveH [ 22. March 2005, 11:19 PM: Message edited by: SteveH ]

  21. I have been watching this thread with great interest, and now for a response that is devoid of 'politics', personal antipathy, axes to grind, etc. etc. Years ago I used to belong to a couple of angling clubs. As far as I know, they were affiliated to larger organisations. But, and to be totally honest, for a lot of years now I have been a selfish angler, much like the majority of anglers I suspect. Why do I class myself as selfish? Because I have not supported angling in that time. Yes I have suported fishery owners, those with piscatorial rights, tackle dealers, etc. But have I supported angling as a whole, no. Having quietly witnessed this thread, I am now trying to decide my next step. One step may be to join the ACA. BUT, and this is a big but, I want to give FACT a chance, what I have read here gives me some hope that this fledgling organisation may, with the experienced people active within it, become what it has the potential to become. My immediate problem with this, is that some anonymous, proxy, affiliate 'membership' does not suit my needs. I would prefer an individual membership, whether that be in some section set up by FACT so that they have a membership list of individuals who can become a well spring of ideas, complaints, support and debate fodder, or whether that be simply as an associate I don't care. this could be self funding by setting a realistic level of membership fee. But to be honest, without this the best that FACT or any other organisation can do is offer representation by 'guesstimate'. Individual membership at any level would enable the polling of individual needs and wants. Until such time as this might prove possible, I will join one of the organisations that have membership within the FACT 'family'. Thank you all for your contributions, the passionate expressions of belief here have stirred me to offer more concrete support to the sport I love and which has given me so much. One request, I know that debate can be heated, but as adults do we have to let it decend to name calling, sabre rattling and point scoring. That is demeaning to the ones making the contributions that feed this debate, and it is insulting to those of us who watch and form our opinions based on the debate. Insulting? Yes, I hope my intellect, whilst nothing to brag about, is such that I wont have my opinions swayed by schoolyard name calling and dummy spitting. Once again thanks to all involved for the wake up call and for highlighting how much I am risking by simply going out to fish without making a real contribution to the sport as a whole. SteveH
