Asking you good folk for opinions on a favourite water of mine.
The water in question is a stretch of canal that boasts many features such as a turning bay, junction, boat house, overhanging willow trees and two bridges. I've fished this stretch for many years with the last few years targeting the carp that inhabit this rarely fished area. The carp are not present in large numbers but offer a challenge and are always in pristine condition.
Now my problem. Over the past two winters i've noticed, while doing the odd zander fishing session, that the zander numbers have increased as well as their weight. I have also blanked on all eight carp sessions on this water since the start of the year. All methods and tactics that have produced previously have just not come up with the goods. There also seems to be no sign of the carp, where previously carp would often be seen "topping", this year there seems to be nothing.
Now...I'm beginning to think that maybe these carp have just moved on, although my experience on this water tells me they should be there. I'm also thinking that the ever increasing zander have pushed the carp out of this section. I know that zander are pack hunters but could/would they attack the carp?
The largest carp i've landed from this particular stretch of canal is a tad over 16lb but they average between 8-12lb. The largest zander that came to the net was just short of 6lb but they are mainly between 2-5lb.
So please add your thoughts, are these zander the cause of the lack of signs of the carp
